Partial Opening of Bujeon-Masan Double-Track Railway on April 1, 2027... Connecting Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do in About 30 Minutes

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that under the implementation plan for the Bujeon-Masan Double-Track Railway Project unveiled today, August 25, by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, part of the line will open and begin operations on April 1, 2027.

The partial opening is being pursued to alleviate transportation inconvenience for residents of Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do at an early stage by utilizing sections that have already been completed, excluding the Sasang Station-Gangseo Geumho Station section, which is currently undergoing a safety review by the Ministry’s Construction Accident Investigation Committee.

The Bujeon-Masan Double-Track Railway Project is a 32.7-kilometer metropolitan railway project connecting Bujeon Station in Busanjin-gu, Busan, with Jillye Signal Station in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do. It is a build-transfer-lease (BTL) public-private partnership project under which a private project operator constructs the railway and transfers ownership to the state upon completion.

Once the entire line opens, direct service between Bujeon and Masan will become possible, replacing the existing route via Bujeon, Samnangjin and Masan. Travel time will be significantly reduced from 1 hour and 30 minutes to about 30 minutes, and the line is expected to become a key transportation infrastructure asset along the southern coastal corridor of Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do.

The sections scheduled to open on April 1, 2027 are the Bujeon Station-Sasang Station section and the Gangseo Geumho Station-Jillye Signal Station section.

The Bujeon Station-Sasang Station section will connect with the Jungang Line and Donghae Line, providing through service toward Cheongnyangni and Dongdaegu. The Gangseo Geumho Station-Jillye Signal Station section will connect with the existing Gyeongjeon Line, providing direct service toward Changwon and Masan.

For the unopened Sasang Station-Gangseo Geumho Station section, Busan Metropolitan City plans to consult with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant agencies on operating connecting shuttle buses between Gangseo Geumho Station, Seobusan Yutongjigu Station and Sasang Station to improve transfer and travel convenience for passengers.

Full opening of the line will be pursued with securing the safety of the Nakdong Tunnel 1 section as the top priority. Based on the findings of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Construction Accident Investigation Committee, which is currently conducting its investigation, the project will undergo thorough safety verification with the goal of opening the entire line by the end of 2028.

Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, “The Bujeon-Masan Double-Track Railway is a key metropolitan transportation network that connects Busan and western Gyeongsangnam-do as one and supports the formation of a mega-regional living and economic sphere in the southeastern region.”

He added, “We will conduct thorough safety verification and ensure that the project proceeds without disruption toward the full opening by the end of 2028. We will also continue to work closely with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and other relevant agencies so that residents of Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do can begin experiencing improved transportation convenience at an early stage through the partial opening in 2027.”
