Busan Metropolitan City Explores Ways to Expand Job Opportunities for Older Adults and Middle-Aged Workers at the Our Neighborhood ESG Center

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will visit the Busanjin-gu branch of the Our Neighborhood Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Center at 14:30 today, August 25, and hold a “100-Day Livelihood Partnership Roundtable” to hear directly from people at employment sites and explore measures to expand jobs for older adults and middle-aged workers and revitalize the local economy.

At the roundtable, the City will hear about difficulties and suggestions from participants in employment programs for older adults and middle-aged workers amid challenging economic conditions, including high inflation and the prolonged economic downturn.

Rather than simply listening to their views, the City will also discuss practical improvements and follow-up measures so that needs identified in the field can be reflected in municipal policies.

Based on the views raised at the roundtable, the City plans to continue strengthening its employment policies so that more citizens can participate in quality jobs.

In particular, to support citizens facing difficulties arising from factors such as the super-aged society and high inflation, the City will move swiftly to expand Busan-style jobs for older adults, jobs for middle-aged workers, and professional jobs for senior workers, while making every effort to create customized employment opportunities suited to the experience and expectations of skilled senior and middle-aged workers.

The employment expansion plan calls for 4,500 additional jobs for older adults, 200 additional jobs for middle-aged workers, and 500 additional professional jobs for senior workers.

In addition, alongside the major employment pledges included in the 100-Day Emergency Measures for People’s Livelihoods under the ninth popularly elected municipal administration, the City plans to pursue a range of customized care initiatives across the welfare sector, including establishing an integrated, relationship-centered care system and expanding free meal services for older adults.

Before the roundtable, the City will also conduct an on-site tour of the Our Neighborhood Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Center and the Gaegum Comprehensive Social Welfare Center. During the tour, officials will meet directly with social workers operating the facilities, participants in employment programs for older adults, and citizens using the programs to assess conditions affecting people’s livelihoods at employment and care sites.

At the Our Neighborhood Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Center, the delegation will observe resource-circulation activities involving discarded banners, waste plastic, and spent coffee grounds, as well as hands-on demonstrations of a plastic shredder and an electric generator.

At the Gaegum Comprehensive Social Welfare Center, the delegation will visit a local children’s center to observe child-care services, followed by visits to a daytime care center for persons with disabilities and various program rooms.

Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, “Jobs for older adults and middle-aged workers are publicly funded employment programs supported by national and municipal budgets, and they provide an important foundation in a super-aged society by helping participants achieve economic independence and enjoy active later years.”

He added, “Busan Metropolitan City will continue expanding high-quality Busan-style jobs in both quantity and quality, working from the perspective of our citizens to build a Busan where citizens move forward together in happiness.”
