Busan Selected for MOTIE’s “Development of an Autonomous Driving-Based Smart Port Mobility Platform” Project!

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s 2026 Automotive Industry Technology Development R&D project, “Development of an Autonomous Driving-Based Smart Port Mobility Platform.”

The project will be jointly led by the Korea Automotive Technology Institute and Busan Port Authority, with participation from regional and sector-specific institutions and companies including Smart M2M Co., Ltd., MTR Co., Ltd., Sungwoo Hitech Co., Ltd., Hyosung Electric Co., Ltd., Chaevi Co., Ltd., CyberLogitec Co., Ltd., Onmakers Co., Ltd., Wearbi Co., Ltd., and Aceworks Korea Co., Ltd.

With the project’s selection, Busan Metropolitan City will invest a total of KRW 45.46 billion over 42 months from 2026 to 2029, comprising KRW 20 billion in national funding, KRW 15 billion in municipal funding, and KRW 10.46 billion in private-sector funding, to jointly implement three subprojects for port automation and unmanned operations.

The Korea Automotive Technology Institute and Busan Port Authority will jointly lead demonstration activities at Busan New Port. Through three subprojects respectively led by the Korea Automotive Technology Institute, Smart M2M Co., Ltd., and MTR Co., Ltd., the project will comprehensively develop core technologies for port-specific autonomous driving and electrified autonomous mobile robot (AMR) mobility, including artificial intelligence (AI)-based integrated control and demonstration, perception of non-line-of-sight areas, megawatt-class automatic charging, and 24-hour unmanned operation.

Through this project, Busan Metropolitan City expects to improve the efficiency and safety of logistics operations at Busan Port and accelerate the transition of local parts manufacturers into the future automotive and mobility sectors while advancing their technological capabilities.

In particular, the City plans to proactively secure advanced logistics handling capabilities in preparation for the era of Arctic shipping routes. It will also establish a foundation for entering the smart port system market at Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates, thereby strengthening the global competitiveness of domestically developed smart port platforms.

Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, “Being selected for this project will provide an important foundation for transforming Busan Port into an advanced smart port, advancing the region’s future automotive industry, and proactively responding to changes in the global logistics environment, including the development of Arctic shipping routes.”

He added, “We will make every effort to build a sustainable future port mobility ecosystem by ensuring seamless progress from technology development and demonstration to commercialization.”
