Busan Metropolitan City to Hold Citizen Forum on Building a Busan-Style Opera Ecosystem

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, will hold the “Citizen Forum on Building a Busan-Style Opera Ecosystem” as part of a deliberative process with citizens to ensure the successful opening and sustainable operation of Busan Opera House.

The forum has been organized to discuss with citizens how Busan Opera House can establish itself not simply as a venue for attending performances, but as a producing theater that creates opera and ballet productions, grows together with local artists, and expands Busan’s performing arts ecosystem.

In preparation for the opening of Busan Opera House, Busan Metropolitan City has been advancing work in a wide range of areas, including establishing a venue operating system, preparing in-house productions, fostering seasonal ensemble members, expanding opportunities for local artists to participate, and developing audiences.

At the forum, Busan Metropolitan City will transparently share the progress of these efforts with citizens, while experts, artists, and citizens exchange views on what Busan Opera House should create in the future, with whom it should grow, and what cultural value it should provide to the people of Busan.

The forum will begin with Busan Metropolitan City’s presentation on “Revitalizing the Local Arts Ecosystem by Establishing Busan Opera House as a Producing Theater,” followed by a discussion moderated by Oh Jae-hwan, former President of the Busan Cultural Foundation.

Panelists will include Yang Song-mi, Professor at Kyungsung University; Park Jae-yul, Executive Representative of the Busan Citizens’ Coalition for Decentralization and Balanced Development; Lee Seung-ho, former President of the Busan Music Association; and Jang Jin-gyu, President of the Busan Metropolitan City Opera Companies Association. The Director General of Busan Metropolitan City’s Culture Bureau and the CEO of Classic Busan will also participate to gather a range of views and respond to questions.

In particular, the forum will go beyond an expert-centered discussion by providing a separate question-and-answer session, giving citizens an opportunity to directly raise questions and share their views on the future of Busan Opera House. Through this dialogue, Busan Metropolitan City plans to continue building public consensus.

The city will also carefully review questions and proposals from citizens that warrant policy consideration and plans to reflect them in the future operation of Busan Opera House.

Following the forum, the Busan Metropolitan City Cultural Cooperation Committee will convene in September for focused deliberations. The city will also hold a Culture and Arts Policy Town Hall Meeting for the ninth elected municipal administration, using these deliberative processes to establish policy directions and principles.

The forum will take place from 15:00 on August 24 in the Grand Auditorium on the first floor of Busan City Hall. Applications to participate may be submitted from August 13 through 21 via the Classic Busan website at classicbusan.busan.go.kr.

Cho Yoo-jang, Director General of Busan Metropolitan City’s Culture Bureau, said, “The Busan Opera House construction project has entered a stage where completing the building itself is no longer the sole objective. What matters even more is what content we will create, which artists we will work with, and what experiences we will provide to citizens.”

He added, “Through this forum, we will actively listen to a wide range of views from citizens so that Busan Opera House can establish itself as a leading producing theater that provides local artists with opportunities for creation and growth while offering citizens high-quality performances and diverse opportunities to enjoy culture.”
