Busan Metropolitan City Partners with Busan Regional Communications Office to Designate 78 Post Offices as Heatwave Shelters

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will designate and operate 78 post offices across Busan as heatwave shelters in cooperation with the Busan Regional Communications Office, headed by Heo Won-seok.

The designation of these heatwave shelters is part of efforts to strengthen safety measures for vulnerable groups amid the prolonged heatwave by utilizing the network of post offices located throughout Busan.

Older adults vulnerable to extreme heat, seniors living alone, mobile workers, and the general public will be able to escape the heat at nearby post offices. The shelters will operate during weekday business hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and residents may freely visit and rest even if they are not using postal or financial services.

Operating hours may vary at some post offices depending on local circumstances.

Busan Metropolitan City is currently concentrating its administrative resources on minimizing heat-related damage by operating heatwave shelters, conducting regular safety checks on vulnerable residents, strengthening safety measures for outdoor festivals and events, and implementing heatwave measures that directly benefit residents, including shade structures, bottled-water refrigerators, and cooling fog systems.

The City plans to continue actively cooperating with the Busan Regional Communications Office and other relevant agencies to steadily expand easily accessible spaces where residents can escape the heat in their daily lives.

Meanwhile, to ensure that people from a wide range of backgrounds can access emergency cooling spaces whenever needed during extreme heat, the City has expanded heatwave shelters, Neighborhood Climate Shelters, Smart Bus Shelters, shelters at subway stations, and mobile worker shelters. It has also newly established overnight emergency shelters and convenience-store shelters for mobile workers.

Lee Byung-seok, Assistant Mayor of Citizen Safety Office, said, “With the record-breaking heatwave continuing, it is essential to establish a comprehensive safety net that allows residents to escape the heat anytime and anywhere.”

He added, “We will continue to work closely with relevant agencies and devote all available resources to our heatwave response so that every resident can stay safe and healthy throughout the summer.”
