Busan Metropolitan City to Hold “100-Day Partnership for People’s Livelihoods Roundtable” at Dongnae Market

Busan Metropolitan City announced that Mayor Chun Jae-soo will visit Dongnae Market at 3:00 p.m. today, August 11, to hold a “100-Day Partnership for People’s Livelihoods Roundtable” aimed at hearing directly from traditional market merchants and exploring ways to revitalize the local economy and improve people’s livelihoods.

The roundtable has been organized to hear firsthand about the difficulties traditional market merchants are experiencing amid persistently high prices and a prolonged economic downturn, and to explore practical measures that can deliver tangible improvements to the local economy and people’s livelihoods.

During the roundtable, participants will share information on the current operation of Dongnae Market and hear about the difficulties merchants are facing, including weakened consumer spending and rising prices, as well as their recommendations for revitalizing traditional markets.

In particular, the discussion will go beyond simply listening to opinions. Participants will also discuss practical improvements and follow-up measures to ensure that needs identified on the ground are reflected in municipal policies.

Based on the views raised at the roundtable, Busan Metropolitan City will continue pursuing effective support measures that enable merchants to see tangible improvements in sales recovery and business stability.

Busan Metropolitan City will focus on policies for people’s livelihoods that make a substantive contribution to increasing sales and stabilizing business operations for small business owners in traditional markets and neighborhood commercial districts, going beyond simple improvements to facilities and the business environment or one-off support for events.

In particular, to reduce the operating burden on merchants and stimulate consumption in traditional markets and neighborhood commercial districts, the city plans to swiftly implement measures such as energy voucher support to reduce fixed costs for small business owners, a temporary increase in Dongbaekjeon cashback to 15%, and consumer spending stimulus coupons, with the aim of translating these measures into higher sales.

At the same time, the city is carrying out a range of tailored support programs this year to strengthen the competitiveness of traditional markets and improve convenience for residents, including facility improvements, expansion of parking infrastructure, and Onnuri Gift Certificate rebate events for consumers.

The city will continue communicating with traditional markets and neighborhood commercial districts, identifying effective support measures that merchants can tangibly benefit from and reflecting them in municipal policies.

Following the roundtable, officials will tour major shops in Dongnae Market. During the tour, they will listen to merchants experiencing difficulties due to extreme heat and the economic downturn and review the business environment and current conditions affecting people’s livelihoods in the traditional market.

During the tour, the mayor will also visit a newly registered Dongbaekjeon QR payment merchant and personally present the merchant with a QR code panel, supporting efforts to expand the number of Dongbaekjeon QR merchants and reduce card processing fee burdens for small business owners.

Dongbaekjeon QR payment is a convenient system that allows customers to make payments through a smartphone app without a separate card terminal. Because merchants are not charged payment processing fees, the system is expected to help traditional market merchants and small business owners reduce operating costs.

As part of the “Busan 100-Day Emergency Measures for People’s Livelihoods,” the city is intensively expanding Dongbaekjeon QR merchants, particularly in traditional markets and neighborhood commercial districts.

The city plans to rapidly expand a payment environment that can reduce Dongbaekjeon card processing fee burdens by providing one-stop support, from guidance on merchant registration to installation of QR panels for payments.
