Busan Metropolitan City Respects Selection of Site for New Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Headquarters and Will Work with the Ministry to Complete Busan’s Vision as a Maritime Capital

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced today, August 6, that it respects the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ decision, reached through an expert review process, to select the Phase 1 North Port Redevelopment site in Dong-gu as the location for its new headquarters.

According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the selection process began in late July with the submission of proposals from four basic local governments in Busan—Gangseo-gu, Nam-gu, Dong-gu, and Jung-gu—and proceeded through an objective evaluation conducted on August 5 by a Site Selection Review Committee composed of 10 experts from various fields.

The Phase 1 North Port site in Dong-gu received high marks across all evaluation categories, including ease of securing the site, potential for clustering with other institutions, and transportation accessibility, and was ultimately selected.

Busan Metropolitan City will provide prompt and comprehensive administrative support to ensure the smooth construction of the new Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries headquarters.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has announced plans to finalize the scale of the facility within this year and begin full-scale procedures toward completing the new headquarters by 2030. Accordingly, Busan Metropolitan City will provide administrative support in areas including urban planning, transportation infrastructure development, and permits and approvals related to new construction to ensure that the project proceeds without disruption.

The construction of the new Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries headquarters within the North Port redevelopment area is also expected to accelerate the creation of a maritime industry ecosystem by attracting related institutions and companies to cluster in the area.

Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, “I am deeply grateful for the efforts of the four basic local governments that actively pursued the opportunity amid strong public interest, as well as for the support of our citizens. We will concentrate all our capabilities, in cooperation with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, not only on the successful construction of its new headquarters but also on establishing a maritime capital region that will lead the era of Arctic shipping routes.”

He added, “We will devote the city’s administrative capacity to ensuring that the benefits of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ relocation are not confined to a particular area, but contribute to balanced development throughout Busan.”
