Busan Metropolitan City Ranks No. 1 Nationwide in the Metropolitan Sewerage Category of the 2026 Local Public Enterprise Management Evaluation

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it ranked first among nine metropolitan-level local governments nationwide in the metropolitan sewerage category of the 2026 Local Public Enterprise Management Evaluation (2025 performance) conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, receiving Grade B.

The sewerage management evaluation, conducted biennially by the Local Public Enterprise Evaluation Institute, saw Busan Metropolitan City improve both its grade and ranking from Grade C and second place among metropolitan-level local governments in the previous evaluation in 2024 to first place this year.

The City received high marks for proactively developing sewerage infrastructure to prevent flooding and protect residents, as well as for its systematic maintenance and management efforts.

In particular, the City was recognized for projects directly related to public safety, including intensive management of designated priority areas at risk of flooding, proactive installation of manhole fall-prevention devices, and completion of detailed inspections of aging sewer pipelines to establish a data-driven maintenance and management system.

The City also received positive evaluations for its systematic implementation of projects across all areas of sewerage services, including the stable advancement of separate sewer system projects, the full-scale construction of a deep underground stormwater storage tunnel beneath Oncheoncheon Stream, and sewerage treatment plant modernization projects.

Meanwhile, the 2026 Local Public Enterprise Management Evaluation (2025 performance) assessed nine metropolitan-level local governments nationwide through document reviews and online evaluations based on 18 detailed indicators in two areas: management administration and management performance.

Sim Jae-min, Assistant Mayor of Environment and Water Policy Office, said, “Achieving first place in this management evaluation is the result of all our employees working together to improve public safety and quality of life. We will continue to do our utmost to provide sewerage services that residents can trust through continuous management improvements and the development of sustainable sewerage infrastructure.”
