Citizens Shape the Future: WDC BUSAN 2028 Citizen Participation Content Idea Contest Opens

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will hold the WDC BUSAN 2028 Citizen Participation Design Idea Contest from today (August 5) through October 4 to discover citizen-driven content that can be developed into signature projects for WDC Busan 2028.

The contest is designed to enable citizens to move beyond simply participating in city initiatives by becoming co-creators who help plan and shape the city. It also aims to establish a new model of civic participation in which citizens, experts, and the administration collaborate together.

The WDC BUSAN 2028 Citizen Participation Design Idea Contest is a citizen engagement program designed to realize the theme of WDC Busan 2028, “An Inclusive City, Design We Create Together.”

Its goal is to refine creative ideas proposed by citizens in collaboration with experts and develop them into official content for WDC Busan 2028.

Submitted ideas will first undergo a document review to identify outstanding proposals. Selected participants will then receive expert mentoring to further develop their concepts before advancing to a presentation evaluation, through which the final winners will be selected.

Outstanding ideas chosen through the contest will undergo pilot implementation and further refinement in 2027 before being developed into content that can be incorporated into the official events and regional programs of WDC Busan 2028.

Applications will be accepted through the official contest website, www.wdcbusanidea.kr, from today (August 5) through October 4. The contest is open to all Korean citizens, who may participate individually or as part of a team.

Participants are invited to propose event concepts that can be incorporated into the official programs of WDC Busan 2028.

Entries should include both an idea for the World Design Street Festival, a signature program of World Design Capital cities, and an idea for a region-specific program that reflects Busan's urban identity and distinctive local characteristics.

The results of the first-round evaluation will be announced on October 9. Following expert mentoring and the second-round presentation evaluation on November 17, the final winning entries will be announced on November 30.

Awards include one Grand Prize of KRW 3 million, two Excellence Awards of KRW 2 million each, six Merit Awards of KRW 1 million each, and sixteen Encouragement Awards of KRW 500,000 each. The Grand Prize, Excellence Awards, and Merit Awards will be presented with the Busan Metropolitan City Mayor's Award, while the Encouragement Awards will receive the President's Award of Design Council Busan.

Beginning with this contest, Busan Metropolitan City plans to establish a culture of citizen participation in which residents help plan and create programs together as a lasting legacy of WDC Busan 2028 while continuing to expand a wide range of citizen participation initiatives.
