Busan Metropolitan City Provides Heatwave Response Supplies to 170 Households Vulnerable to Extreme Heat

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will implement the 2026 Heatwave Response Support Project for Climate Crisis-Vulnerable Groups from today, August 4, through August 21 to protect the health and safety of people vulnerable to the climate crisis amid the ongoing heatwave.

The project was established to prevent heat-related illnesses and strengthen climate change resilience by providing heatwave response supplies and guidance on practical heatwave safety measures to vulnerable residents, including older adults living alone.

The project will be jointly carried out by Busan Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, Yeongdo-gu, the Korea (Busan) Climate and Environment Network, and participating companies. It will support 170 vulnerable households in Sinseon-dong and Cheonghak-dong, Yeongdo-gu.

Climate crisis adaptation consultants will visit the selected households in teams of two to provide guidance on appropriate actions during a heatwave and methods for maintaining good health, while also delivering heatwave response supplies.

The supplies, provided through corporate social responsibility activities, will include practical items such as summer blankets, sun and rain umbrellas, ready-to-eat porridge, bottled water, balloon flower root tea, and reusable shopping bags. These items are intended to minimize adverse health effects caused by extreme heat.

Busan Metropolitan City will continue to actively respond to abnormal weather events caused by the climate crisis, including heatwaves and cold waves, and expand a range of climate adaptation policies to ensure that climate crisis-vulnerable groups can live safely.

Shim Jae-min, Assistant Mayor of Environment and Water Policy Office, said, “Heatwaves are difficult for everyone, but they pose a particularly high risk of adverse health effects for vulnerable groups. We will do our utmost to help them stay safe throughout the summer by providing heatwave response supplies.”
