Busan Designates Uldo Sanhaerok as a Busan Metropolitan City Tangible Cultural Heritage and Steps Up Efforts to Discover Maritime Heritage Materials

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it officially designated Uldo Sanhaerok as a Busan Metropolitan City Tangible Cultural Heritage today, July 29.

The City identified a valuable cultural heritage asset in Busan and officially designated it as a tangible cultural heritage following deliberation by the Tangible Heritage Subcommittee of the Busan Metropolitan City Heritage Committee.

Uldo Sanhaerok, held by the National Maritime Museum of Korea, is an important historical source that illustrates the development of the maritime defense system and territorial protection strategies in the southeastern waters during the late Joseon period.

The book compiles the complete record of Inspector Lee Kyu-won’s survey of Ulleungdo from April to May 1882, following his appointment as Inspector of Ulleungdo in 1881, together with a supplementary report submitted to King Gojong. It is a valuable source for examining Ulleungdo’s environment at the time and changes in policies concerning the inspection and protection of the island.

Cho Yoo-jang, Director General of the Culture Bureau, said, “We will actively identify Busan’s abundant maritime cultural heritage and secure historical and cultural content befitting Busan’s status as a maritime capital so that all citizens can enjoy it.”

Of these, 121 are nationally designated or registered heritage assets, and 469 are designated or registered by Busan Metropolitan City.
