Busan Metropolitan City Steps Up Efforts for a Safe Summer, Inspecting Heat-Vulnerable Residents and Power Supply Operations

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, will visit the Busan Hope Lighthouse Comprehensive Support Center and the Korea Electric Power Corporation Busan-Ulsan Headquarters in succession today, July 27, beginning at 3:20 p.m. The visits will assess measures to protect heat-vulnerable residents and the response system for managing summer electricity supply and demand.

The inspections have been arranged to review the implementation of measures protecting people vulnerable to extreme heat, including those experiencing homelessness, amid the continuing heat wave, and to examine power supply and demand management measures designed to address rising summer electricity demand.

Mayor Chun will first visit the Busan Hope Lighthouse Comprehensive Support Center, a comprehensive support facility for people experiencing homelessness. He will review the center’s heat-wave response operations, including outreach counseling for people living on the streets and the provision of emergency overnight accommodations, and verify that protection measures are being implemented without disruption.

From June through September, Busan Metropolitan City operates a Joint Homeless Outreach Team in cooperation with district and county offices, the police, fire services, and relevant facilities. The team conducts patrols two to four times a day, depending on the heat-wave alert level, and strengthens on-site counseling in major areas such as Busan Station and Seomyeon.

Mayor Chun will receive a briefing on measures to protect people experiencing homelessness during extreme heat. He will call for thorough and comprehensive protection measures, commend frontline workers for their dedication despite the intense heat, and listen to the challenges they encounter in the field.

He will then visit the Korea Electric Power Corporation Busan-Ulsan Headquarters for a briefing on power supply and demand management measures in preparation for increased summer electricity demand. He will also emphasize the importance of cooperation among relevant organizations to maintain a stable power supply and commend personnel for their efforts.

Busan Metropolitan City is working closely with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Korea Electric Power Corporation, the Korea Energy Agency, and other relevant organizations to share information on electricity supply and demand. The city maintains a phased response system in accordance with the Field Action Manual for Power Supply and Demand Disasters in the event of a power supply emergency, ensuring comprehensive and stable management of electricity supply and demand.

The city will also promote public participation in energy conservation through street campaigns, the distribution of promotional materials, public guidance on maintaining appropriate indoor cooling temperatures, and efforts to discourage businesses from operating air conditioning with their doors open. These initiatives are intended to support a stable summer power supply and foster a culture of energy conservation.

Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, “As extreme heat becomes increasingly common and prolonged, we will maintain a comprehensive response system so that no resident is left unprotected and concentrate all available administrative resources on ensuring a safe summer for everyone.”

He added, “From protecting residents vulnerable to extreme heat to maintaining a stable power supply, we will work closely with relevant organizations to prevent disruptions to residents’ daily lives.”
