Busan Metropolitan City Invites Companies to Develop AI-Based Recycled Products, Giving New Life to Local Waste Resources

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, and Busan Technopark announced that they are accepting applications through August 7 from companies seeking support to develop products and produce prototypes using the platform and to participate in platform enhancement. The recruitment marks the first demonstration phase of the AI-Based Recycled Design Platform Development Project.

The AI-Based Recycled Design Platform Development Project is designed to use locally generated waste resources as new design materials and integrate artificial intelligence to support the development and commercialization of environmentally friendly products.

This recruitment is for a field-oriented demonstration program that combines AI-based 3D design and recycled materials with companies’ product ideas to assess their potential for actual product development.

From the initial stage of platform development, Busan Metropolitan City plans to incorporate companies’ practical needs and user experiences to improve the completeness and real-world applicability of Busan’s AI-based recycled design platform.

Selected companies will receive support throughout the entire product development process using the AI design platform, from developing product concepts and establishing design directions to material recommendations and matching, prototype production, testing, inspection, and certification.

The AI design platform provides features such as color, material, and finish recommendations and recycled-material recommendations based on 3D design proposals generated from emotion-related language. It will be used to reduce trial and error during the early stages of development and improve product development efficiency.

The platform visualizes designs by analyzing language used to express emotions.

Selected companies will also serve as demonstration partners by presenting suggestions and feedback identified while using the platform and participating in its enhancement.

The project will use locally generated waste resources, including spent coffee grounds, oyster shells, and cork, as recycled raw materials. These materials are expected to be applied to a wide range of products, including cups, key rings, trays, footwear components, slippers, and stools without backs or armrests.

Through these efforts, local waste resources are expected to be utilized not simply as materials requiring disposal, but as high-value-added design materials, creating a foundation for Busan-based design and manufacturing companies to enter the environmentally friendly product market.

Busan Metropolitan City also plans to combine AI design technology and recycled materials with Busan’s key manufacturing industries, including footwear, fashion, and household goods, to establish a circular product development model centered on local companies.

Beginning with this recruitment of participating companies, Busan Metropolitan City plans to establish an AI design and recycled-material database and progressively enhance both the recycled design platform’s material recommendation and matching functions and its links with manufacturing companies. Through these efforts, the city will continue to support local companies in developing and commercializing environmentally friendly products.

In particular, the city plans to continuously improve the quality of AI-generated designs, the accuracy of recycled-material recommendations, and product commercialization linkage functions by incorporating usage data and feedback from participating companies.

The city also intends to promote collaboration between design and manufacturing companies and systematically accumulate information on waste-derived materials, using it as a foundation for creating a Busan-style recycled design industry ecosystem.
