“Help Us Find the Heroes Among Us”: Silver Hero Contest to Improve Perceptions of Older Adults

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will hold a contest to improve perceptions of older adults in response to the emergence of a super-aged society. The contest is intended to promote positive views of older adults and strengthen intergenerational understanding and empathy.

Hosted by the Comprehensive Support Center for the Elderly Living Alone, the contest will run through August 31.

Under the theme “Silver Hero,” participants may freely depict a moment when a grandfather or grandmother close to them seemed like a hero, or the kind of hero they would like to become when they themselves grow older.

The contest consists of four categories: drawings, photographs, written works, and six-line acrostic poems. All Busan residents are eligible to participate.

A total of 67 outstanding entries will be selected. Winners will receive cash prizes as well as awards from the Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City, the Superintendent of the Busan Metropolitan City Office of Education, and the Chairperson of the Busan Metropolitan Council.

Hwang Soon-gil, Director-General of the Social Welfare Bureau, said, “Older adults are respected seniors who have steadfastly supported our society throughout their lives and are the principal figures who helped build the Busan we know today.”

He added, “We hope this contest will provide a meaningful opportunity to build empathy across generations, promote a culture of respect for older adults, and help all residents rediscover the heroes among us.”
