Busan Metropolitan City to Host Forum on Strategies for Sustainable Fisheries Resource Management and Mutually Beneficial Growth of the Recreational Fishing Industry

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will hold a forum on “Strategies for Sustainable Fisheries Resource Management and Mutually Beneficial Growth of the Recreational Fishing Industry” today, July 27, at 2:00 p.m. in Rooms 121 and 122 of BEXCO Exhibition Center 2.

The forum has been organized to assess sustainable conservation policies for fisheries resources amid the challenges of climate change and declining fish stocks, and to discuss practical approaches to mutually beneficial growth for commercial fishers and the recreational fishing industry through a healthy marine leisure fishing culture.

Approximately 110 representatives from Busan Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, local governments, research institutes, academia, fishing associations, and the commercial fishing sector are expected to attend. The event is hosted and organized by the Busan Fisheries Policy Forum, with support from Busan Metropolitan City, Pukyong National University, and the Busan Metropolitan City Fishing Association.

The program will consist of a keynote address, two thematic presentations, and a panel discussion. Participants will share strategies for regional economic development through fisheries resource management and the promotion of fishing tourism.

In the keynote address, Kim Do-hoon, professor at Pukyong National University, will speak on “New Challenges for Fisheries Resources and the Recreational Fishing Industry in the Blue Economy Era,” presenting approaches to achieving both resource conservation and industrial development.

The thematic presentations will follow. Koo Sung-woo, Director of the TAC Management Office at the Fisheries Innovation Division of the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency, will present “Sustainable Fisheries Resource Management Policies and Future Challenges.” Park Sang-woo, Associate Research Fellow at the Fisheries Research Division of the Korea Maritime Institute, will present “The Economic Value of the Recreational Fishing Industry and Strategies for Regional Economic Development through the Promotion of Fishing Tourism.”

The panel discussion will be chaired by Son Jae-hak, professor at Pukyong National University. Six experts will participate: Kang Dong-yang, Director of the Fisheries Resources Policy Division at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries; Lee Jae-hyung, professor at Korea Maritime & Ocean University; Park Sung-il, auditor of the Busan Metropolitan City Fishing Association; Song Young-taek, President of Hyundai Haeyang; Jeong Yeon-hwa, Chair of HDF Haedong Fishing Tackle Co., Ltd.; and Kang Yang-seok, Chair of the Busan Fisheries Cooperative Federation of Fishing Village Leaders. They will focus on policy priorities for conserving marine ecosystems and promoting mutually beneficial growth with the recreational fishing industry.

Busan Metropolitan City expects the forum to provide an opportunity to identify a balanced direction for fisheries resource conservation and leisure industry development, while developing practical policies that enable commercial fishers and the recreational fishing industry to grow together.

Cho Young-tae, Director General of the Marine, Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, said, “This forum is a meaningful occasion for commercial fishers, representatives of the recreational fishing industry, academia, the central government, and local governments to come together and explore a sustainable future for our seas.”

He added, “As the maritime and fisheries capital of the Republic of Korea, Busan will take the lead in establishing a healthy marine leisure culture and continue providing institutional support and fostering cooperation for the recovery of fisheries resources.”
