Mayor Chun Jae-soo Meets with Lee Seok-yeon, Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on National Cohesion

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that today (July 21) at 11:00 a.m., Mayor Chun met with Lee Seok-yeon, Chairperson of the Presidential Committee on National Cohesion, at the City Hall Reception Room to discuss measures for cooperation on youth policies and balanced regional development.

The meeting was arranged in conjunction with the on-site National Dialogue titled “The Beginning of Conversations for Tomorrow’s Youth (Assets and Jobs): From Disparities to Opportunities,” hosted today by the Presidential Committee on National Cohesion at Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center. The discussion provided an opportunity to share key youth-related issues, including employment, asset building, and regional settlement, and to explore ways for the national and local governments to work together.

Mayor Chun and Chairperson Lee agreed that creating quality jobs and improving living conditions are essential to promoting regional development through the successful settlement of young people in local communities.

The two sides emphasized, “National cohesion is the process of ensuring that everyone enjoys fair opportunities and works together to build hope for the future,” adding, “Youth issues are national challenges directly linked to the sustainable development of the Republic of Korea. Creating quality jobs and stable settlement conditions in the regions is therefore an important starting point for achieving national cohesion.”

Mayor Chun particularly noted, “It is highly meaningful to discuss the future of young people at the North Port, a place that connects Busan’s past and future. By integrating the area’s strengths in startups, culture, and tourism and establishing a strong foundation, we can naturally attract people and businesses, creating a virtuous cycle that generates new jobs.”

The two sides agreed to continue expanding region-specific youth policies so that young people can plan their futures and settle securely in their communities, while further strengthening cooperation between the central and local governments.

Chairperson Lee stated, “For Busan, the maritime capital of the Republic of Korea, to lead the era of Arctic shipping routes and emerge as a global maritime logistics hub by linking Gadeokdo New Airport with Busan Port is a national priority that will enhance the country’s future competitiveness,” expressing high expectations for Busan’s role.

In response, Mayor Chun said, “The issues of youth employment and asset inequality are important challenges that our society must address together,” adding, “Under the 9th popularly elected municipal administration, Busan Metropolitan City will actively pursue youth policies to build Busan into a city where young people gather by providing integrated support that extends from employment and housing to opportunities for challenge and growth, enabling young people to plan their futures, pursue their dreams, and achieve sustainable development in Busan.”

Mayor Chun concluded, “I hope today’s forum serves as a meaningful opportunity to hear the diverse voices of young people and for the national and local governments to work together in seeking solutions,” adding, “Busan Metropolitan City will continue to work closely with the Presidential Committee on National Cohesion to help build a Republic of Korea where more young people can embrace hope and pursue their ambitions.”
