Marine Capital Busan Competes in the Global Seafood Market with AI Technology from a Local Young Enterprise

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that DATASPIRA Co., Ltd., a local startup headed by CEO Lee Yong-eun that received technology transfer and related support from the Auto-ID Labs Busan Innovation Research Institute, an international joint research institute established by Busan Metropolitan City and KAIST, has become the first private company in Korea to obtain certification for a product solution compatible with the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST).

The Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) is an international standards organization established following a proposal by the World Economic Forum (WEF) to ensure safe seafood supplies and prevent illegal fishing. It promotes data standardization to improve transparency throughout the global seafood supply chain.

Its standards also incorporate the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) Work in Fishing Convention (ILO Convention No. 188).

Through this certification, Busan Metropolitan City has established a representative model for creating an "AI Youth Hub" by fostering joint research between outstanding regional AI research institutions and young startup companies. At the same time, the City has secured international seafood standards certification technology, providing a foundation for establishing an International Seafood Exchange and Certification Center.

DATASPIRA Co., Ltd. is a startup established in 2024 with support from the digital transformation standard technologies of the Auto-ID Labs Busan Innovation Research Institute, which Busan Metropolitan City attracted in 2022.

Beyond seafood, DATASPIRA is preparing to enter overseas markets with intelligent product solutions that provide end-to-end supply chain traceability and regulatory compliance for the distribution and sale of a wide range of products. The company is expected to grow into a unicorn startup.

As international seafood traceability regulations continue to tighten, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), this certification is expected to strengthen the competitiveness of the regional seafood supply chain and serve as a foundation for Busan to become a leading global seafood supply chain city through the establishment of an International Seafood Exchange and Certification Center.

Busan Metropolitan City expects that the GDST-certified product solution will expand the application of diverse AI technologies and services based on transparent seafood traceability data throughout local industries, the public sector, and citizens' daily lives.

Businesses are expected to enhance their competitiveness by responding more effectively to export regulations and reducing production costs through supply chain optimization. Citizens will benefit from reliable information on safe seafood based on transparent traceability data, while data-driven scientific policy analysis and expanded public services are also expected.
