Busan Metropolitan City to Hold Urban Landscape Archive Exhibition and Public Lecture

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Chun Jae-soo) announced that it will hold the exhibition “Memories and Records of Urban Busan” from today (July 19) through August 9 in the first-floor exhibition hall of the Seokdang Museum at Dong-A University.

The exhibition is part of the Busan Urban Landscape Archiving Project, jointly promoted by Busan Metropolitan City and the Busan International Architecture Festival Organizing Committee since 2025. It has been organized to systematically document, preserve, and share with citizens the rapidly changing urban landscape of Busan.

Under the theme “Memories and Records of Urban Busan,” the exhibition presents the urban landscape archives accumulated through the project, enabling visitors to explore Busan’s transformation and current 모습 from a variety of perspectives.

The exhibition is especially meaningful because it is being held at the Seokdang Museum of Dong-A University, a site symbolic of Busan’s modern and contemporary history, offering visitors an opportunity to reflect on the city’s transformation.

The Seokdang Museum also served as the Government Complex during the temporary capital period of the Korean War and is one of the sites included in Busan Metropolitan City’s ongoing effort to inscribe “Heritage of Busan as the Wartime Capital during the Korean War” on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The exhibition is organized into six sections: Records of Urban Landscape Transformation, Memories of Busan, Landscapes of Busan, People of Busan, Transformation of Busan, and Vision for Busan.

The “Records of Urban Landscape Transformation” section compares photographs taken in 2010 with present-day views, illustrating how Busan has changed over time while highlighting the memories and values embedded in the city’s evolution.

In addition, approximately 400 photographs are displayed under the themes “Memories of Busan,” “Landscapes of Busan,” “People of Busan,” “Transformation of Busan,” and “Vision for Busan,” featuring the city’s history and cultural heritage, urban scenery harmonizing mountains, rivers, and the sea, the everyday lives of its citizens, major buildings and urban infrastructure, and key future development projects.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Busan Metropolitan City will also host a public lecture on July 21 in the seminar room of the Seokdang Museum at Dong-A University.

Beginning at 2:00 p.m., experts will deliver presentations on the history and identity of Busan’s urban landscape, the characteristics and challenges of Busan’s waterfront landscape, and the memories and records of Urban Busan.

Participation requires advance registration, and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. The exhibition will run from today (July 19) through August 9. It will be closed from July 25 to August 3.

Moon Jeong-joo, Director General of the Future Design Headquarters, said, “Documenting the urban landscape is an essential undertaking that preserves Busan’s history, identity, and the lives of its citizens for the future.
