Busan Metropolitan City Hosts Academic Conference to Explore Strategies for Expanding the Value of Cultural Heritage and Achieving UNESCO World Heritage Inscription

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will host the Busan History Academic Conference on July 24 at 1:00 p.m. in Room 121 of BEXCO Exhibition Center II under the theme “Busan’s Cultural Heritage Reimagined as World Heritage.”

The conference has been organized to commemorate the hosting of the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan. It aims to examine the Outstanding Universal Value of Busan’s cultural heritage from an academic perspective while exploring its potential for UNESCO World Heritage inscription and identifying effective strategies for pursuing that goal.

Scholars and cultural heritage experts will discuss the World Heritage value of Busan’s cultural heritage and related inscription strategies, while also exploring ways to promote the historical and cultural significance of Busan to audiences both in Korea and abroad.

The conference program will consist of an opening ceremony, a keynote presentation, three thematic presentations, and a comprehensive panel discussion.

In the keynote presentation, Professor Park Eun-kyung of Dong-A University will present “Busan’s Cultural Heritage, Challenging UNESCO: Building New Connections and Expanding Value,” outlining strategies for establishing the World Heritage value of Busan’s cultural heritage and strengthening the foundation for future inscription.

The thematic presentations will provide in-depth discussions on World Heritage inscription strategies across various categories of Busan’s cultural heritage.

The first presentation, by Professor Jeon Ju-hui of Dong-A University, is titled “The Potential for Transforming Busan’s Intangible Heritage into UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: Focusing on the East Coast Ogugut Ritual.”

The second presentation, by Professor Son Sook-kyung of Catholic University of Pusan, is titled “The World Heritage Value of Regional Documentary Heritage: The Potential for Inscribing the Records of the Dongnae Giyeonghoe on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.”

The third presentation, by Professor Ha Su-jin of Pusan National University, is titled “The Process and Limitations of Advancing Busan’s Natural Heritage toward World Heritage Status.”

The comprehensive panel discussion will be moderated by Professor Kim Dong-cheol of Pusan National University, with all presenters and designated discussants participating. The designated discussants include Kim Kwang-hee, Director of the Korea Heritage Service Foundation; Jeong Je-gyu, Senior Specialist at the Korea Heritage Service; and Professor Kim Soon-gi of Sunchon National University. Following the presentations, participants will engage in a comprehensive discussion on the potential for UNESCO World Heritage inscription of Busan’s cultural heritage, related academic and policy challenges, and sustainable approaches to conservation and utilization.
