Hwamyeong Arboretum in Busan Sees Blooming of the Geumjeongsan Flagship Species, the Slender Pink

Hwamyeong Arboretum of Busan Metropolitan City (hereinafter referred to as the “Arboretum”) announced that the Slender Pink, the flagship species of Geumjeongsan Mountain and a rare endangered plant, has begun blooming within the Arboretum.

The Slender Pink is a protected species found naturally only on Geumjeongsan Mountain in Busan. It is designated as a Class II Endangered Wildlife Species and a Critically Endangered (CR) rare plant, making it a species of exceptionally high conservation value.

Belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family, the Slender Pink produces deep crimson flowers from July to August. It is characterized by five petals with finely fringed upper edges. As a wetland-dependent species that grows exclusively in mountain wetlands, it is also recognized as a representative indicator species reflecting the ecological health of mountain wetland habitats. Consequently, it requires continuous monitoring and management in response to changes in its habitat.

As part of its ex situ conservation efforts, the Arboretum introduced the Slender Pink in 2025 and has since propagated and conserved the species. The current blooming is regarded as a meaningful outcome of these long-term conservation efforts.

Kim Jong-yeol, Director of the Green City Development Office of Busan Metropolitan City, said, “As a national conservation institution for rare and endemic plants, Hwamyeong Arboretum will continue its efforts to conserve plant species through ex situ conservation. At the same time, we will further expand exhibitions, educational programs, and public outreach activities to raise citizens’ awareness of the value of rare and endemic plants and the importance of their conservation.”
