Bokcheon Museum to Hold Special Invitational Lecture in Connection with Special Exhibition

Bokcheon Museum, affiliated with the Busan Museum, announced that it will hold a special invitational lecture in connection with its special exchange exhibition on July 30 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:40 p.m. in the museum’s lecture hall.

Since May 22, the museum has been presenting its 30th anniversary special exchange exhibition, “Memories of Ancient Tombs, Shaping Today,” which explores the encounter between ancient cultural heritage and contemporary ceramic art. The exhibition is on view in the Special Exhibition Gallery on the first floor of the museum through August 17.

The exhibition features works by 15 contemporary ceramic artists who reinterpret artifacts excavated from the Bokcheon-dong Ancient Tombs, Historic Site No. 273, an ancient burial site located in the heart of Busan. It represents a convergence of archaeology and contemporary art by combining the archaeological value of local cultural heritage with modern artistic aesthetics.

The exhibition brings together distinguished professors and accomplished artists who are leading figures in the Korean ceramics field. Visitors can appreciate a wide range of ceramic works interpreted from different artistic perspectives while learning about the excavated artifacts that inspired each piece.

The invitational lecture consists of two sessions related to the special exchange exhibition, offering participants an opportunity to explore the modern reinterpretation of ancient Gaya pottery excavated from the Bokcheon-dong Ancient Tombs.

The first lecture, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., is titled “The Essence of Gaya Culture: Gaya Pottery.” Dr. Cho Sung-won of the Gyeongju National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage will discuss the types, history, and artistic characteristics of ancient Gaya pottery, including artifacts excavated from the Bokcheon-dong Ancient Tombs.

The second lecture, from 3:10 p.m. to 4:40 p.m., is titled “The Transformation of Ceramics: From Tradition to the Present.” Professor Kim Hyun-sook of the Department of Art at Pusan National University will present the dramatic evolution of Korean ceramics from traditional pottery to contemporary ceramic art.

Participation in the lecture is free of charge and is open to 50 adults. Registration is available from today (July 14) through July 28 via the Bokcheon Museum website at https://museum.busan.go.kr/bokcheon/index or in person at the information desk on the first floor of the museum. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sung Hyun-joo, Director of Bokcheon Museum, said, “From the various earthenware vessels of prehistoric and ancient times to celadon, buncheong ware, and white porcelain, all objects made by shaping clay can broadly be classified as ceramics, and they represent one of the largest categories of our cultural heritage.” She added, “We hope this invitational lecture will deepen public understanding of the long history of Korean ceramic culture, from ancient times to the present, and of the process through which it has evolved into contemporary ceramic art.”
