Seeking Policy Wisdom from the Field… Busan Metropolitan City Conducts the Nation’s First Comprehensive Survey of Sports Professionals

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will hold a briefing for sports organizations on the “Busan Metropolitan City Survey of Sports Professionals” today (July 10) at 4:00 p.m. in the International Conference Hall at City Hall.

The briefing has been organized to introduce the nation’s first comprehensive survey of sports professionals by a local government to the sports community and to share the survey’s direction and key contents.

The Busan Development Institute (BDI) will present the background of the survey, its major components, and the implementation schedule, while also gathering feedback from representatives of individual sports organizations regarding sport-specific conditions and the survey process.

The survey will be conducted through August 31 and will target active athletes, coaches, and referees residing in Busan. It consists of questions covering employment and working conditions, income and welfare, primary and secondary occupations, and other topics to assess the overall welfare status of sports professionals.

The survey will be organized by the Busan Sports Council and carried out by the Busan Development Institute (BDI). Through surveys and interviews with approximately 2,600 participants, it aims to comprehensively examine the working and living conditions of sports professionals in Busan.

To encourage broad participation, Busan Metropolitan City and the Busan Sports Council will work closely with affiliated member sports organizations to promote the survey. They will also continuously monitor its implementation to ensure the reliability of the findings and maximize their value for policymaking.

Busan Metropolitan City intends to use this survey as the first step toward establishing data-driven sports policies under its goal of advancing field-oriented sports administration.

The survey will provide foundational data for developing measures to improve the treatment and working conditions of elite sports professionals in Busan, and its findings will be actively reflected in shaping the sports policy vision of the ninth popularly elected municipal administration.

Meanwhile, Busan Metropolitan City is also carrying out the “Comprehensive Sports Promotion Plan for Busan Metropolitan City” research project (April–October 2026) to identify competitive sports policies and strategic initiatives that will help establish Busan as a leading sports city.

Nam Jeong-eun, Director General of the Sports Bureau, said, “This survey is especially meaningful because it is the first official survey to identify the actual conditions of sports professionals in Busan and establish foundational data for sports policymaking. Based on the voices of those in the field and objective data, we will build a strong policy foundation to further develop Busan as a leading sports city.”
