2026 Busan Metropolitan City Residents' Autonomy Revitalization Workshop to Be Held Today (July 9)

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that it will hold the 2026 Busan Metropolitan City Residents' Autonomy Revitalization Workshop today (July 9) at 3:00 p.m. in the Grand Conference Hall on the first floor of Busan City Hall.

The workshop has been organized to share the evolving environment surrounding residents' autonomy and to explore practical measures for improving and revitalizing its operation based on insights from the field. Approximately 200 participants, including the chair of the Council of District and County Residents' Autonomy Committee Chairs, Residents' Autonomy Committee members from towns, townships, and neighborhoods, and relevant public officials, will attend.

The event will proceed in the following order: an awards ceremony recognizing distinguished Residents' Autonomy Committee members, presentations of outstanding practices from Seodaesin 1-dong and Eomgung-dong, and a special lecture by Ko Ik-jun, Representative of the educational community Aulda.

First, Busan Metropolitan City will present commendations to 15 Residents' Autonomy Committee members who have contributed to community building and regional development in recognition of their dedication and service.

Next, Seodaesin 1-dong will present a case study titled "Learning Becomes Sharing, and Sharing Leads to Growth in Seodaesin 1-dong," introducing a variety of residents' autonomy initiatives in which local residents actively participated and collaborated with the community, including seasonal calligraphy for the Beginning of Spring and a carnation-sharing program made possible through volunteer talent-sharing by community learning clubs.

Eomgung-dong in Sasang-gu will share achievements in revitalizing the local community through resident-participatory cultural events and cooperative exchange programs, including the "October Forest Concert" and an urban-rural exchange program with Geumgwa-myeon in Sunchang-gun.

Finally, Ko Ik-jun, Representative of the educational community Aulda, will deliver a lecture titled "Residents' Autonomy in Transition: Finding the Path for the Busan Model of Residents' Autonomy," focusing on practical approaches to promoting residents' autonomy tailored to local conditions.

Meanwhile, Busan Metropolitan City continues to support community-based residents' autonomy activities through its Village Agenda Public Proposal Program, which enables residents to identify and implement local issues on their own.

This year (2026), 111 Residents' Autonomy Committees applied for the Village Agenda Public Proposal Program, and 83 projects were selected. The selected initiatives focus on practical community issues, including village festivals, environmental protection, welfare, education, public safety, and suicide prevention.

In his welcoming remarks, Heo Nam-sik, Director General of the Administrative Affairs Bureau, is expected to state, "Residents' autonomy cannot be achieved through administrative efforts alone. It demonstrates even greater strength when combined with the participation and dedication of Residents' Autonomy Committee members who know their communities best and communicate closely with local residents." He will add, "We will continue to provide support so that the foundations of residents' autonomy can be steadily expanded and operated in a stable manner, taking into consideration the circumstances and regional characteristics of each district and county."
