Busan Metropolitan City announced that Mayor Chun Jae-soo met with Consul General Chen Ribiao of the People's Republic of China in Busan at the City Hall International Protocol Office at 10:40 a.m. yesterday (July 7) to discuss ways to expand exchanges and cooperation between Busan and Chinese local governments across a wide range of sectors, including the economy, trade, maritime affairs, and tourism.

Mayor Chun first said, "I sincerely welcome Consul General Chen Ribiao despite your busy schedule. Busan and China have maintained close ties for many years across diverse fields such as the economy, trade, culture, and tourism, making us important partners."

He continued, "Since establishing a sister-city relationship with Shanghai in 1993, Busan has maintained active exchanges with six Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, Tianjin, Chongqing, Beijing, and Guangzhou. We have also built a strong foundation for cooperation in the maritime and economic sectors with cities such as Ningbo and Qingdao."

Mayor Chun also noted, "Chinese visitors play a vital role in revitalizing Busan's tourism industry. As interest in Busan has grown following recent world-class cultural events held in the city, we will continue to make every effort to improve the tourism environment and enhance visitor convenience so that Chinese tourists can enjoy a wider range of experiences more comfortably."

In response, Consul General Chen Ribiao said, "It is especially meaningful to be the first head of a foreign diplomatic mission to pay a courtesy visit since your inauguration as Mayor. Busan is a world-class port city that maintains active exchanges with many Chinese cities and is also highly competitive in the fields of healthcare and education."

He added, "With many Chinese residents and international students living in Busan, the foundation for people-to-people exchanges is also very strong. I look forward to further advancing exchanges and cooperation between Busan Metropolitan City and Chinese local governments across various fields, including the economy, trade, maritime affairs, tourism, and culture."

Concluding the meeting, Mayor Chun said, "Exchanges between Busan and Chinese local governments provide an important foundation for shared prosperity and for deepening mutual understanding between our citizens. We will continue working closely with the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Busan to achieve tangible outcomes through practical cooperation."
