Help Prevent Heat-Related Illness with Neighborhood Temperature Information: Heat Wave Information Alert Service Returns This Year

Busan Metropolitan City Institute of Health and Environment announced that it will once again operate its Heat Wave Information Alert Service from July through September, following last year's successful implementation.

The service provides timely neighborhood-level heat wave information by utilizing real-time temperature data collected from 27 urban air quality monitoring stations across Busan.

The service was successfully piloted during August and September of last year. Beginning this year, it will be operated annually from July through September to support full-scale responses to summer heat waves.

The Heat Wave Information Alert Service is available through three channels: the Institute of Health and Environment Information Disclosure System, 16 Air Quality Information Display Boards, and Air Quality Information AlertTalk messages.

A real-time temperature information pop-up is available on the Institute's website (busan.go.kr/ihe/index), while current temperature data is also displayed through the Institute of Health and Environment Information Disclosure System. In addition, all 16 Air Quality Information Display Boards provide real-time temperature and humidity information.

In particular, the Air Quality Information AlertTalk service provides heat wave advisories together with a link for checking current temperatures, allowing users to conveniently receive heat wave information directly on their mobile phones.

During August and September of last year, when the service was in operation, the Institute of Health and Environment Information Disclosure System recorded 96,878 visitors, demonstrating strong public interest. In addition, 419,271 air quality and heat wave information notifications were delivered to citizens through the AlertTalk service.

In response to this strong public interest, the Institute has expanded the service period to begin in July this year and actively encourages citizens to subscribe to the AlertTalk service, which allows them to receive information without repeatedly visiting the website.

Applications for the AlertTalk service, which provides convenient access to Heat Wave Information Alerts, may be submitted through the Institute's website (busan.go.kr/ihe → Community → Air Pollution Forecast Alert Service) or by telephone at +82-51-309-2759.

The Institute also advises citizens who frequently engage in outdoor activities, as well as high-risk groups vulnerable to heat-related illness, including older adults and children, to check temperature information in advance through the website or AlertTalk before going outdoors and to follow everyday heat safety practices, such as limiting outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day.
