Busan Metropolitan City Calls for Building Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam into a New Growth Hub and Engine Through Stronger Regional Cooperation

Chun Jae-soo, Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City, met with Kim Sang-wook, Mayor of Ulsan, at 2:30 p.m. today (July 2) at Busan City Hall to discuss measures for strengthening exchanges and cooperation between Busan and Ulsan.

During the meeting, the two mayors agreed that Busan and Ulsan are already closely connected as part of the same daily living area. They agreed to expand practical cooperation, beginning with transportation and cultural initiatives that citizens can directly experience.

To reduce commuting inconveniences for residents traveling between the two cities, they agreed to initiate working-level consultations between the relevant departments. They also exchanged views on discussing measures to improve public transportation not only between Busan and Ulsan but also in cooperation with Yangsan City.

In the cultural sector, the two mayors discussed jointly hosting a coastal marathon that would capitalize on the shared coastal scenery of the two cities. The proposed course would run along the coastline from Gijang-gun in Busan to Nasari, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun in Ulsan.

Based on the discussions held during the meeting, Busan Metropolitan City and Ulsan Metropolitan City plan to promptly begin working-level consultations to develop concrete cooperative initiatives.

Chun Jae-soo said, “We shared the understanding that Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongsangnam-do must create a new growth hub and a new growth engine capable of competing on equal footing with the Seoul Capital Area. We will actively identify projects that the three regions can pursue together to establish the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region as a single economic zone, and we will continue to explore directions for cooperation through regular meetings.”
