Busan Metropolitan City and the Association of Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps Launch Heat Wave Safety Campaign with Citizens

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Chun Jae-soo, announced that the Association of Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps (hereinafter referred to as the “Association”) will hold a Heat Wave Safety Campaign with Citizens at 2:00 p.m. today (July 2) in the Seomyeon area to help residents prepare for the full onset of the summer heat.

This campaign marks the Association’s first official activity since its new executive officers were elected last November. In line with the policy direction of the ninth elected municipal administration, which places the highest priority on citizen safety, the newly launched Association has organized this on-site heat wave response campaign to promote community-based, citizen-led disaster prevention activities.

Approximately 200 participants, including Association members and Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps members from all 16 districts and counties, will take part in the campaign. They will provide guidance on heat wave safety measures, distribute heat illness prevention supplies and bottled ice water, and promote essential safety practices.

As climate change continues to intensify heat waves and extend their duration, the campaign will focus on raising public awareness of practical heat wave safety measures, including checking weather conditions, avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, minimizing skin exposure when outdoors, taking breaks in cool places, drinking sufficient water, and checking on the safety and well-being of family members and neighbors.

Kim Tae-hoon, President of the Association, said, “The Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps is a representative statutory disaster prevention organization. In addition to conducting heat wave safety campaigns, we plan to carefully check on vulnerable residents whenever heat wave advisories are issued. We will continue to work closely with Busan Metropolitan City and district and county governments to carry out community-based disaster prevention activities.”

Busan Metropolitan City will continue to work closely with the Volunteer Disaster Prevention Corps, the backbone of community disaster prevention efforts, to carefully check on older adults and neighbors who are vulnerable to extreme heat and devote every effort to protecting citizens throughout the summer heat wave season.”
