Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Park Heong-joon, held an emergency response meeting at 3:00 p.m. today (June 25) at the City Hall Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to discuss response measures following the sinking of a fishing vessel caused by a collision between a fishing vessel and a merchant ship in waters off Gijang-gun.

During the meeting, participants reviewed the accident overview and damage status, assessed the personnel, resources, and support required for the rapid search and rescue of those missing, and comprehensively examined practical response measures while discussing the accident recovery plan.

Officials from maritime affairs, disaster and safety management, welfare support departments, the police, the fire service, and other related organizations participated in the meeting to review and coordinate response measures in their respective areas.

Busan Metropolitan City has dispatched a field liaison officer to Daebyeon Port in Gijang-gun and confirmed the hospitals receiving the injured and the missing persons' family members. Dedicated one-on-one public officials have been assigned to provide support, listen to concerns, and facilitate prompt accident recovery efforts.

In addition, the City plans to provide customized psychological counseling and the Mind Relief Program for victims and their families through its Disaster Psychological Recovery Support service. For foreign victims, the City will also provide emergency interpretation services and other forms of assistance to ensure thorough accident recovery and a swift return to normal daily life.

Mayor Park Heong-joon said, “I extend my deepest condolences to the victims and their families. Busan Metropolitan City will make every effort to minimize public anxiety through a swift and accurate response.”

He added, “We will maintain close cooperation with the central government, Yeongdo-gu, Gijang-gun, the Korea Coast Guard, and other relevant organizations, and we will spare no effort in supporting recovery operations by mobilizing all available administrative resources.”
