Busan Metropolitan City Convenes Emergency Response Meeting Following Vessel Collision off Gijang-gun Waters

Busan Metropolitan City announced that it will convene an emergency response meeting at 3:00 p.m. today (June 25) at the City Hall Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, chaired by Mayor Park Heong-joon, regarding the collision between a fishing vessel and a merchant vessel in the waters off Gijang-gun.

The meeting will review the damage resulting from the vessel collision that occurred at approximately 10:09 a.m. today (June 25), about 23 nautical miles east of Daebyeon, Gijang-gun, and discuss measures for prompt recovery and the prevention of further damage.

Officials from disaster safety and maritime agencies, along with other relevant organizations, will review future directions for situation management and response measures.

Yeongdo-gu, where the damaged fishing vessel is registered, has established a Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters and an Integrated Support Headquarters to assist with damage recovery. Gijang-gun, where the accident occurred, has also established an Integrated Support Headquarters to support recovery efforts. Busan Metropolitan City has additionally established its own Accident Recovery Headquarters and is providing full-scale support for response operations.

Date and Time: Approximately 10:09 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 2026

Location: About 23 nautical miles east of Daebyeon, Gijang-gun

Vessels Involved: Fishing vessel No. 3 Donga (registered in Yeongdo-gu, Busan) and merchant vessel Gas Broadway (registered in Busan)

Accident Summary: The fishing vessel capsized after colliding with the merchant vessel.

Casualties: Eight people were on board No. 3 Donga. Six were rescued, including one in cardiac arrest, and two remain missing.

Prior to the meeting, Mayor Park Heong-joon emphasized, “Maintain close coordination among the central government, Busan Metropolitan City, Yeongdo-gu, Gijang-gun, the Coast Guard, and all other relevant agencies. Mobilize all available administrative resources to actively support accident recovery efforts and ensure that no aspect of the recovery process is neglected.”
