Busan Tunnel Traffic Restrictions Due to Power Line Replacement Work to Improve Fire Resistance Performance

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that traffic restrictions will be implemented in Busan Tunnel (between Yeongju-dong in Jung-gu and Daesin-dong in Seo-gu) from June 22 through August 28 (excluding public holidays and weekends) in connection with power line replacement work aimed at improving the tunnel’s fire resistance performance.

The project involves replacing the existing power lines inside Busan Tunnel with fire-resistant cables. The work is being carried out to delay the spread of fire through electrical lines in the event of a fire, thereby securing sufficient evacuation time for citizens. The construction will be undertaken by Beom-A Electric Co., Ltd.

The traffic restrictions will apply to the inbound lanes (Yeongju-dong → Daesin-dong). To minimize disruption during periods of heavy traffic, the restrictions will be enforced for eight hours each control day, from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. the following morning. Public holidays and weekends will be excluded from the restriction period.

Both inbound lanes of Busan Tunnel will be fully closed. To minimize inconvenience to citizens, the two outbound lanes, which will remain open, will be operated as one lane in each direction to accommodate two-way traffic.

Jin Bong-sang, Director of the Construction Safety Testing Office, stated, “We will make every effort to complete the work safely and promptly so that the traffic control period can be shortened and inconvenience to citizens minimized.” He added, “We ask for the active cooperation and understanding of citizens regarding the traffic restrictions.”
