Busan Metropolitan City Launches Drug Harm Prevention Week to Raise Public Awareness

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Park Heong-joon, announced that it has designated the period from June 15 through June 28 as “Drug Harm Prevention Week” in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26), and will undertake a range of activities to prevent drug misuse and abuse while raising public awareness of the issue.

Through the operation of Drug Harm Prevention Week, the city plans to conduct joint public awareness campaigns with related organizations so that citizens can easily recognize the dangers of drugs in their daily lives. The city will also focus on hosting a symposium and providing information on drug-related harms.

First, on June 17 at 7:00 p.m., a symposium entitled “Strategies for Preventing and Intervening in Substance Addiction in the Community” will be held at the Busan Pharmaceutical Association Hall.

The symposium will feature presentations and discussions on practical response measures for preventing substance addiction in the Busan area, including “Sustainable Drug Prevention Education Based on Overseas Cases” and “Therapeutic Community Programs for Addressing Substance Addiction Issues.”

Then, on June 26, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, a public awareness campaign on the harms of drugs will be held at 3:00 p.m. inside Busan Station in collaboration with district and county public health centers, the Busan Pharmaceutical Association, and the Busan Headquarters of the Korea Association Against Drug Abuse.

Through on-site promotional activities such as reciting anti-drug slogans and distributing informational materials, the campaign will deliver prevention messages to the public. It will also promote greater awareness regarding the use of drug-related terminology and provide information on treatment and protection programs for individuals with drug addiction, as well as anonymous drug exposure testing services.

In addition, Busan Metropolitan City will intensify a variety of online promotional activities throughout Drug Harm Prevention Week.

The city will use online communication channels, including its official website (https://busan.go.kr/nbnews), the Busan Pharmaceutical Association website (https://bpa.or.kr), and social media platforms, to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs and the importance of preventing addiction while encouraging public interest and participation.

Cho Gyu-yul, Director General of the Citizen Health Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “The drug problem is not an issue for individuals alone but a challenge that our entire society must address together. Through Drug Harm Prevention Week, we will continue our efforts to heighten public awareness and promote a correct understanding of the dangers of drugs.”
