Busan Metropolitan City Proves Itself as the Nation’s Leading Records Management Institution, Receives the 2026 Presidential Citation for Excellence in National Records Management

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Park Heong-joon, announced that it received the Presidential Citation in recognition of its exceptional achievements in innovating public records management at the commemorative ceremony for the 2026 Records Day held yesterday (June 9) at the Grand Auditorium of the Government Complex Seoul Annex.

○ Records Day (June 9 each year) is a legally designated commemorative day established in 2019 to carry forward Korea’s distinguished records culture tradition and share the value of records with the public.

○ At the annual commemorative ceremony, the National Archives of Korea presents awards to public institutions and individuals (or organizations) that have contributed to the advancement of national records management and the promotion of records culture.

Busan Metropolitan City has once again secured the nation’s highest honor, the Presidential Citation, following its previous Presidential Citation in the records management field in 2005 and three subsequent Prime Minister’s and ministerial commendations. This latest achievement further demonstrates that the city has firmly established itself as Korea’s leading local government in records management.

○ The city received high praise for its efforts to ensure transparent and systematic management of administrative records, including the establishment of the “Busan Metropolitan City Common Administrative Records Retention Schedule,” the promotion of the nation’s first metropolitan government audiovisual records database project, and the phased implementation of procedures to establish the Busan Archives.

Meanwhile, Busan Metropolitan City plans to use this award as an opportunity to further strengthen its own records management standards and expand public access to and utilization of public records. Through these efforts, the city aims to realize an “open records administration” that enables citizens to conveniently access records related to Busan anytime and anywhere.

Park Geun-rok, Director General of the Administrative Affairs Bureau, stated, “This Presidential Citation is the result of the long-standing dedication of all city employees who have worked tirelessly to transparently and securely document and preserve the history of municipal administration. It also demonstrates the strength of Busan Metropolitan City’s records administration, which has been steadily built up since receiving its first Presidential Citation 21 years ago. We will successfully advance the Busan Archives Construction Project, which passed the central investment review this year, and establish a new standard for records management not only for Busan Metropolitan City but also for local governments across Korea.”
