Busan Metropolitan City Launches Full-Scale Efforts to Transform Gadeokdo New Airport into a Global Logistics Hub

Busan Metropolitan City, under Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk, announced that it will hold a kickoff briefing session for the “Service for Establishing an Action Plan for Developing an Air Logistics Hub at Gadeokdo New Airport” today (May 28) at 2:00 p.m. in the City Hall conference room on the 10th floor.

The project is being promoted as the construction of Gadeokdo New Airport enters a full-scale phase following the launch of the airport design work by the Daewoo E&C consortium in March. The initiative aims to establish an air logistics system and multimodal logistics infrastructure that will enable passenger and logistics functions to operate organically after the airport opens.

Busan Metropolitan City plans to develop a detailed action plan from both aviation and multimodal logistics perspectives in order to strengthen the international competitiveness of Gadeokdo New Airport and gradually build a Sea & Air multimodal logistics system linked with Busan New Port.

The project will be carried out over approximately 18 months from May this year through October next year. Key tasks include analyzing domestic and international logistics trends and advanced case studies, assessing airport user demand, identifying sector-specific revitalization measures, and formulating phased implementation plans.

In particular, the city intends to move beyond existing infrastructure-centered discussions and establish effective strategies that actively reflect the needs of actual airport users such as airlines, logistics companies, and cargo owners.

Through this initiative, the city plans to derive implementation-oriented strategies encompassing all aspects of air logistics, including airport infrastructure and operations, hinterland complexes, connected transportation systems, institutional frameworks, and incentives.

At the kickoff briefing session, the project implementation agency will present the direction of the project and detailed implementation plans, followed by consultations and discussions with relevant departments and experts.

As the project focuses on building a multimodal logistics system linking Gadeokdo New Airport’s air logistics functions with Busan Port, approximately 15 participants—including officials from the city’s New Airport Promotion Headquarters, Maritime and Port Division, and Tri-Port Planning Division, as well as industry and academic experts—will attend to share a range of perspectives.

Busan Metropolitan City plans to systematically establish a policy foundation through this action plan to maximize the air logistics capabilities of Gadeokdo New Airport and develop a Sea & Air multimodal logistics hub connected with Busan New Port.

Kim Kyung-duk, Acting Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “For Gadeokdo New Airport to fulfill its role as a global logistics hub airport, it is essential to create an environment that enables active route operations and cargo attraction.” He added, “We will make every effort to ensure that this project goes beyond simply presenting alternatives and results in the establishment of implementation-oriented strategies that fully reflect on-site voices and expert opinions.”
