Commemorative World Heritage Tour to Be Held in Celebration of Busan Hosting the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee

Busan Metropolitan City, under Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk, announced that it will hold a “World Heritage Tour” to commemorate the hosting of the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC) this July and to raise public awareness of World Heritage.

The tour program is designed as a promotional initiative ahead of the main events of the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, scheduled for July 13–29. It offers participants the opportunity to directly visit and experience Busan Wartime Capital Heritage sites and World Heritage sites in the southern region. The program is especially meaningful in that it allows participants to experience the official World Heritage Committee tour program one month in advance.

A total of four tours will take place over two days, June 19 and 20, consisting of two half-day tours themed around the Busan Wartime Capital Heritage and two full-day tours exploring World Heritage sites in the southern region.

The half-day tours will visit Busan Wartime Capital Heritage locations including the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum, Busan Regional Meteorological Administration (former National Central Meteorological Observatory), Ami-dong Tombstone Cultural Village, and the Provisional Capital Memorial Hall.

The full-day tours will include one World Heritage course in Ulsan and Yangsan featuring Tongdosa Temple and the Bangudae Petroglyphs, and one Gyeongju World Heritage course featuring Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, and Daereungwon Tomb Complex.

Anyone interested in participating may apply beginning tomorrow, May 20, at 10:00 a.m. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis through the QR code provided on the official Busan Metropolitan City website (https://bs2.kr/HPdx) and social media posts.

Meanwhile, Busan Metropolitan City plans to prepare the UNESCO World Heritage Committee session not merely as an international conference, but as an event in which citizens can actively participate and engage, while also using the opportunity to introduce Busan’s culture and tourism resources to the world.

During the conference period, the city will operate a “Busan Pavilion” within the “K-Heritage House” at Exhibition Hall 1 (Halls 2B and 3A·B) of BEXCO. Through this pavilion, Busan’s representative cultural heritage and tourism resources will be introduced to domestic and international visitors. The city also plans to widely promote its efforts toward World Heritage inscription through exhibitions and experiential programs themed around national heritage assets such as the Busan Wartime Capital Heritage.

Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk stated, “This UNESCO World Heritage Committee session will serve as an important opportunity to further elevate Busan’s capacity to host international conferences and strengthen its image as a global city.” He added, “Through the commemorative World Heritage Tour for the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, we hope to further promote Busan’s hosting of the event and increase nationwide interest in World Heritage.”
