Busan Metropolitan City Accepts Nominations for the 69th Busan Metropolitan City Cultural Awards

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk, announced that it will accept nominations for the 69th Busan Metropolitan City Cultural Awards from today, May 11, through July 24.

The Busan Metropolitan City Cultural Awards were established to discover and honor cultural artists who have contributed to the promotion of culture and arts in the region and enhanced the prestige of Busan.

Since 1957, the city has annually presented these awards to individuals with distinguished achievements in advancing regional culture and fostering cultural awareness among citizens.

Recognized as the most prestigious award in Busan’s cultural sector, the awards are presented to one recipient in each of 10 categories: humanities, natural sciences, literature, performing arts, visual arts, sports, traditional arts, popular arts, journalism and publishing, and spatial arts.

As of last year, 2025, a total of 426 recipients had been honored. Notable recipients include Dr. Woo Jang-choon in science in 1957, novelist Kim Jeong-han in literature in 1959, and Dr. Jang Gi-ryeo in community development in 1980.

Candidates may be cultural artists who, regardless of residence, have demonstrated creativity in their respective fields and made outstanding contributions to the development of Busan’s local culture.

Recommendations may be submitted by heads of relevant institutions and organizations in each category, university presidents or deans, district heads and county governors, heads of central administrative agencies located in Busan, or individuals supported by the joint signatures of at least 20 citizens aged 18 or older.

Nominations must be submitted by registered mail or in person and must arrive no later than July 24.

The city will conduct working-level reviews and final evaluations of submitted candidates from September through mid-October before selecting the final recipients. Award plaques from the Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City are scheduled to be presented at an awards ceremony in late October.
