Busan Metropolitan City Women’s Cultural Center to Hold Traditional Coming-of-Age Ceremony Commemorating the 54th Coming-of-Age Day

Busan Metropolitan City Women’s Cultural Center announced that it will hold a Traditional Coming-of-Age Ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on May 18 in the Grand Auditorium on the second floor of the Women’s Cultural Center to commemorate the 54th Coming-of-Age Day.

The Traditional Coming-of-Age Ceremony has been held annually on the third Monday of May to celebrate young adults who have newly reached adulthood as they enter society with pride and dignity, while also fostering a healthy coming-of-age culture that encourages responsibility and civic duty.

The event will consist of a commemorative ceremony, the coming-of-age rite (reenactment of the traditional coming-of-age ceremony), and post-event programs. Twenty young men and women turning 20 this year will participate dressed in traditional ceremonial attire and receive etiquette education, including the meaning of the ceremony, how to wear hanbok, and proper bowing etiquette.

During the traditional rite, the ceremony will reenact traditional practices in a modern format, including introductory greetings between honored guests and the coming-of-age participants, the Three Admonitions Ceremony in which three ceremonial addresses are delivered to the participants, the capping and hairpin ceremonies symbolizing adulthood, the coming-of-age oath and declaration formally recognizing adulthood, and the instructional rite conveying words of guidance to the new adults.

Celebratory performances by the Women’s Cultural Center Arts Volunteer Group, including traditional percussion, Korean dance, folk songs and pansori, and gayageum performances, will present a refined showcase of traditional Korean arts and culture. In addition, side events will be held in the second-floor lobby beginning at 12:30 p.m., including a gabaecha (coffee) tasting event for visitors and a photo zone featuring instant Polaroid photography. The photo zone will be available for the first 100 visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.
