“Please Call It the ‘15-Minute City Happy School Route’” — Busan Metropolitan City Finalizes New Name for Safe School Routes

□ Busan Metropolitan City, led by Acting Mayor Kim Kyung-duk, announced that “15-Minute City Happy School Route” has been selected as the final grand prize-winning name through the public naming contest for the city’s “15-Minute City Safe School Route” initiative.

□ The contest was launched to create a citizen-driven name for the “Safe School Route Development Project,” which aims to secure pedestrian rights centered on students. A total of 2,076 public submissions were received between March 23 and April 5.
○ The “Safe School Route Development Project” is a strategic initiative designed to secure “Happy Living Zones,” one of the core values of the 15-Minute City Busan vision. Through the “Integrated Design Development Service for Safe School Routes,” which commenced on April 27, the city plans to establish specialized designs for safe school routes and formulate phased plans to strengthen student-centered pedestrian rights.

□ Based on the submitted proposals, Busan Metropolitan City conducted a first-round internal review followed by a second-round evaluation by a judging committee. As a result, “15-Minute City Happy School Route” was selected as the grand prize winner, while “15-Minute Safe School Route,” “Safety Hero,” “Airo 15,” and “15-Minute Children’s Path” were selected as excellence award winners.

□ The grand prize-winning name, “15-Minute City Happy School Route,” embodies the values of the 15-Minute City initiative and conveys the city’s commitment to creating safe and comfortable routes for students. The city plans to use the winning name in public outreach and efforts to expand citizen engagement and awareness.
○ “15-Minute City Happy School Route” represents the goal of creating safe and pleasant walking routes for children within a 15-minute walk to school. It also conveys the idea of neighborhood paths where children can feel emotionally happy, cared for, and at ease while walking. In addition, the name was recognized for being intuitive and easy for citizens to remember.
○ The finalized name will be actively utilized in future promotional campaigns and public engagement efforts related to the 15-Minute City Safe School Route initiative.

□ Seong Heui-yeob, Vice Mayor for Future Innovation, stated, “We will establish phased improvement plans to ensure both pedestrian rights and safety around school zones where student foot traffic is concentrated.” He added, “We also hope citizens will actively use and embrace the newly named ‘15-Minute City Happy School Route,’ created through public participation.”
