Busan Temporary Capital Memorial Hall to Host “Evacuee School Tent Classroom” Program for Elementary Students in the First Half of 2026

The Temporary Capital Memorial Hall, under the Busan Modern and Contemporary History Museum, announced that it will hold the educational program “Evacuee School Tent Classroom – The Day We Wear Black Rubber Shoes” for elementary students and their accompanying families on Saturdays during the first half of 2026.

The program will be operated once a week every Saturday from the second week of April to the second week of June, for a total of 10 sessions (13:30–15:00).

The “Evacuee School Tent Classroom” is an experiential program conducted in an outdoor tent classroom at the Temporary Capital Memorial Hall, offering various activities related to Busan as the wartime temporary capital. In the first half of this year, under the theme “Life in Busan as the Temporary Capital,” participants can take part in lectures, guided exhibition tours, and a hands-on activity decorating black rubber shoes.

Participants will explore sections such as the “rubber shoes” exhibit in the exhibition hall to learn about daily life during the Korean War and the development of the rubber shoe industry in Busan. They will then move to the outdoor tent classroom to engage in worksheet-based learning and decorate their own pair of rubber shoes.

Participation in the program is free of charge, and each team consists of one elementary school student and one parent or guardian.

Applications can be submitted from 9:00 a.m. on Monday to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday of the week of each session via the Busan Integrated Reservation Website (https://reserve.busan.go.kr), on a first-come, first-served basis for up to eight teams per session. A guardian may apply on behalf of the student, but only one student can be registered per account (ID).

Baek Sun-young, Director of the Temporary Capital Memorial Hall, stated, “Through the Evacuee School Tent Classroom, we hope participants will learn about the wisdom of Busan citizens who endured difficult lives during the war and experience their daily lives, gaining a deeper understanding that Busan served as both the temporary capital of the Republic of Korea and a center of industry during the Korean War.”
