Busan Metropolitan City Signs Agreement to Successfully Host the “Global Busan Design Fair”: Transforming the Entire City into a Stage

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will sign a business agreement to promote the Global Busan Design Fair today (April 8) at 2:00 p.m. in the International Protocol Room of City Hall.

The signing ceremony will be attended by Seong Heui-yeob, Vice Mayor for Future Innovation; Park Jin-seok, Acting Head of Dong-gu, Busan; and Cho Hyun-min, CEO of DRB Holding Co., Ltd.

This agreement was prepared to establish a cooperative framework among institutions for the successful promotion of the Global Busan Design Fair, the largest design-specialized exhibition event in Korea, which will be held for the first time in Busan this November.

The city plans to implement a Busan-style model that allows people to experience design throughout the entire city, not limited to exhibition venues, by referencing the world-renowned urban design event, Milan Design Week.

According to the agreement, Busan Metropolitan City will oversee the overall promotion of the Global Busan Design Fair and provide policy and administrative support; Dong-gu, Busan will provide administrative cooperation to ensure the smooth implementation of related projects such as the creation of a Design Street; and DRB Holding Co., Ltd. will be responsible for cooperation in organizing the event, including providing off-site exhibition spaces.

The areas of cooperation among the institutions include strengthening the competitiveness of Busan’s design industry through the successful hosting of the fair; revitalizing local commercial districts, tourism, and culture through programs linked to urban spaces; expanding private-sector participation; and promoting outcomes through external publicity cooperation, thereby establishing a mutual cooperation system for the stable and smooth operation of the fair.

The Global Busan Design Fair is an event aimed at fostering the design industry by discovering Busan-specific differentiated content through linking urban spaces and industrial heritage with design exhibitions, and by connecting with local commercial districts, tourism, and culture.

Through this, it is expected that citizens will naturally experience the value and meaning of design in their daily lives and that Busan’s distinctive design assets will be widely expanded.

In particular, this agreement is significant as a model of cooperation in which the public and private sectors work together to create the city’s future value. Busan Metropolitan City plans to use this as an opportunity to expand design capabilities across the entire city, thereby strengthening the competitiveness of the design industry and revitalizing the local economy.

Vice Mayor for Future Innovation Seong Heui-yeob stated, “Design is an important driving force that opens the future of a city. Through this agreement, the Global Busan Design Fair is expected to expand Busan’s new possibilities and values and serve as an opportunity to elevate Busan into a city where design exchange and business actively operate.
