Busan to Host “International Conference on the Great Transformation of Busan’s Urban Spatial Strategy”: Discussing the Vision for a Future City with Citizens

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the “International Conference on the Great Transformation of Busan’s Urban Spatial Strategy” today (26th) at 2:00 PM in the International Conference Hall of City Hall.

The event is expected to be attended by approximately 300 participants, including Seong Heui-yeob, Vice Mayor for Future Innovation; Choi Yeol, Chief Urban Planner of the city; Professor Carlos Moreno; Tanaka Kazuo, CEO; as well as experts in academia, public institutions, and urban planning, along with citizens.

This conference has been organized to explore spatial strategy directions that will enable Busan to respond to rapidly changing urban environments and leap forward as a global hub city.

Under the theme “The Great Transformation of Urban Spatial Strategy: Busan, a Future City Created by Integration and Innovation,” the conference will proceed in the following order: keynote speech, thematic presentations, expert discussions, and collection of opinions.

In the keynote speech, Choi Yeol, Chief Urban Planner of Busan Metropolitan City and Distinguished Professor at Pusan National University, will present on the topic “Urban Competitiveness Created by the Great Transformation of Urban Space: Integration and Innovation.”

Following this, thematic presentations will include:
Professor Carlos Moreno of IAE Paris Sorbonne Business School presenting “The City of Proximity: A New Paradigm for Urban Living”;
Tanaka Kazuo, CEO of GK Design Group, presenting “Design Reconstructs the Value of Cities”;
and Professor Kwon Tae-jung of Dong-A University’s Department of Urban Engineering presenting “A New Foundation for Citizens’ Daily Lives: Blue Busan Waterfront.”

After the presentations, an expert discussion moderated by Chief Urban Planner Choi Yeol will follow, focusing on the necessity of transforming urban spatial strategies and ways to secure global urban competitiveness.

The discussion will include Professor Nam Gwang-woo of Kyungsung University; Lee Seung-hee, Vice President of the Korea Planners Association; Professor Shim Ji-soo of Pusan National University; Kang Mi-sook, Member of the Presidential Commission on Architecture Policy; Kim Dong-han, Research Fellow at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements; and Min Soon-gi, Director General of the Future Spatial Strategy Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City.

Through this conference, Busan Metropolitan City plans to share the future vision for Busan’s urban space with both domestic and international experts and citizens, discuss policy directions, and identify diverse policy ideas to be utilized in establishing urban spatial strategies.

In particular, the city will explore mid- to long-term urban spatial strategy directions linked to policies such as the “15-minute city,” strengthening design-based urban competitiveness, restructuring spatial organization centered on living zones, and revitalizing waterfront garden cities.

The city also plans to derive innovative spatial policy measures by sharing overseas city cases and policy experiences, and to gradually reflect these in the city’s comprehensive plan and major urban development projects.

Furthermore, Busan Metropolitan City intends to consolidate policy proposals and expert opinions derived from the conference and use them as foundational data for establishing urban spatial strategies to prepare for the next 100 years of Busan.

Seong Heui-yeob, Vice Mayor for Future Innovation, stated, “This international conference will serve as an important starting point for newly exploring Busan’s future urban spatial strategies,” adding, “Through continued cooperation and discussions with global urban experts, we will do our utmost to establish innovative spatial strategies that enhance citizens’ quality of life and strengthen urban competitiveness.”
