Experience Busan’s Living Traditions Firsthand: Intangible Cultural Heritage Programs Now Underway

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will operate an “Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience Program” from April through November at four transmission education centers—Busan Folk Arts Center, Busan Traditional Arts Center, Gudeok Folk Arts Center, and Dadaepo Folk Arts Center—so that citizens can directly experience and enjoy the region’s traditional culture.

This program has been designed to move beyond passive, viewing-centered cultural consumption by offering participatory, hands-on content that allows citizens to more easily and vividly understand the value of intangible cultural heritage.

The city plans to operate differentiated programs at each transmission education center, reflecting regional characteristics and combining education, performances, and hands-on experiences.

Major programs include “Play Dongnae!”, which combines performances and hands-on experiences such as Dongnae Yaryu and Dongnae Hakchum; traditional culture experience classes where participants can learn artisans’ skills such as embroidery, ceramics, and dancheong; the “Busan Nongak Playground” for elementary school students; and the “Hurri Sori Traditional Class,” a participatory program for multicultural families and children.

In particular, some programs are structured as two-week courses or step-by-step training sessions, enabling participants to gain a deeper understanding of the history and significance of intangible cultural heritage beyond simple hands-on experiences.

The experience programs will be operated from April to November according to the schedule of each transmission education center, and all citizens are eligible to participate.

Busan Metropolitan City is focusing on expanding intangible cultural heritage beyond simple preservation into “living culture” that citizens can directly experience and carry forward. Through customized programs that encompass all generations—from children to adults—the city expects to strengthen the foundation for transmitting intangible cultural heritage and further enhance public awareness of Busan’s unique traditional culture.

The city also plans to expand participation in these programs and continuously develop and promote various initiatives that utilize intangible cultural heritage in connection with school education and tourism content.

Jo Yu-jang, Director General of the Culture Bureau, stated, “Intangible cultural heritage becomes truly valuable only when it continues within the lives of citizens,” adding, “We will continue to promote Busan’s unique traditional culture and pursue cultural heritage policies together with citizens through diverse experiential programs.”
