Busan Metropolitan City Launches Citizen Naming Contest for “15-Minute City Safe School Routes”

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold a citizen naming contest for safe school routes under the theme “Help Name the 15-Minute City Safe School Routes” from today (23) through April 5.

The Safe School Route Development Project is a strategic initiative to secure “happy living zones,” a core value of the 15-minute city Busan. The project targets 638 schools across the city and includes measures such as car-free streets, elimination of illegal parking, road diets, and designation of one-way traffic to ensure student-centered pedestrian rights.

Any interested citizen may participate by submitting a proposed name and its meaning through a simple online survey accessible via the provided link or QR code.

Following a two-stage evaluation process consisting of an initial internal review and a secondary review by a judging committee, the city will select one grand prize winner and four excellence award recipients. The final results will be announced on the city website in April.

Evaluation criteria will include originality (alignment with the contest purpose and identity), creativity (novelty and differentiation from existing names), public appeal (ease of pronunciation and memorability), and scalability (usability and promotional potential).

Prizes include a mobile gift certificate worth KRW 300,000 for the grand prize winner, KRW 100,000 each for up to four excellence award recipients, and KRW 5,000 each for 50 participants selected by random draw.

Min Soon-gi, Director General of the Future Space Strategy Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “We will gradually develop safe routes so that students can travel to school with peace of mind, thereby ensuring the safety of future generations. We ask for the interest and participation of citizens and encourage many to take part in this contest.”
