Busan Metropolitan City Holds Second Round of Relay Meetings on Fisheries and Fishing Village Development: Strengthening Communication with Fishermen and Building a Foundation for Sustainable Fisheries

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it held the “Second Relay Meeting for Collecting Opinions on Fisheries and Fishing Village Development” on March 20 in the conference room of the Jagalchi Fish Market auction site of the Busan Cooperative Fishery Association.

Approximately 70 participants attended the meeting, including the head of the city’s Fisheries Policy Division, Oh Seong-tae, Chairman of the Busan Cooperative Fishery Association, heads of fishing village cooperatives, and fishermen.

This meeting was organized to listen to voices from the field and seek practical solutions for fishermen who continue their work despite challenging conditions such as declining fishery resources and rising costs.

Key agenda items included a wide range of field-oriented issues such as marine debris management, development of national fishing ports, and resolving difficulties faced by aquaculture fishermen.

Based on the discussions, the city plans to review and promote initiatives including pilot projects, proposals to expand aquaculture farm areas, amendments to the Fisheries Act, designation of a national marine ecological park, and development of region-specific seed varieties to respond to high water temperatures.

Starting with an on-site meeting with fishermen in Gijang-gun on January 20, 2026, the city has been continuing relay communication meetings across Busan. The collected opinions will be reflected in the “3rd Busan Fisheries and Fishing Village Development Plan” to establish a foundation for sustainable development.

In addition, the city will promote responses to the climate crisis, recovery of fishery resources, and the creation of multifunctional fishing village and port spaces through initiatives such as the creation of marine forests, management of fishing villages and fishing grounds, the Fishing Village New Vitality Enhancement Project, development of urban complex multifunctional fishing ports, restructuring of offshore and coastal fisheries, and fish seed purchase and release programs.

At the same time, the city plans to implement support policies that fishermen can directly experience, including the provision of public interest allowances and direct payments, fuel cost support for small fishing vessels, and support for fisheries policy insurance and energy-saving equipment.

Cho Young-tae, Director General of the Marine and Fisheries Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “Although the fisheries industry is facing a crisis due to climate change, depletion of fishery resources, and rising fuel prices, if we find answers on-site, we can certainly create new opportunities,” adding, “This meeting will serve as a turning point for a new leap forward in the city’s fisheries industry.”
