Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold an appointment ceremony today (March 13) at 10:00 a.m. in Small Conference Room II on the 12th floor of City Hall to appoint new members to the Busan Sports Promotion Council.

The Busan Sports Promotion Council is a consultative body established under the National Sports Promotion Act. Its roles include providing consultation and deliberation on the establishment of sports promotion plans, the implementation of policies to advance sports, and matters related to international sports exchanges and the development of the sports industry.

Overview of the Busan Sports Promotion Council

• ●Legal basis: Article 5 of the National Sports Promotion Act and Article 9 of the Busan Metropolitan City Sports Promotion Ordinance

• ●Composition: 14 members currently appointed out of 15 total (Chairperson: Mayor of Busan Metropolitan City, Vice Chairperson: President of the Busan Sports Council)

• ●Term of members: Two years (one reappointment permitted)

• ●Key function: Consultation and deliberation on major sports promotion policies, including planning and advisory roles

The newly appointed members consist of sports professionals with extensive field experience from diverse backgrounds, including one City Council member, one representative from the Metropolitan Office of Education, four representatives from academic societies and associations, two athletes or coaches, and three university professors.

Members will serve two-year terms from March 13, 2026 to March 12, 2028, with the possibility of one reappointment. The city selected the members through an open recruitment process conducted from January 31 to February 6, 2026.

The appointment ceremony will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon and Busan Sports Council President Jang In-hwa, followed by an informal discussion session and the first meeting of the council.

During the informal discussion session, the newly appointed members will share their impressions and exchange a wide range of views on the overall direction of sports development in Busan, including ways to promote participation in recreational sports.

During the Busan Sports Promotion Council meeting, participants will review and share the major work plans and achievements of the city’s Sports Bureau for 2025–2026. Discussions will focus on key accomplishments in the sports sector last year and this year’s implementation plans, with council members presenting opinions and engaging in discussions on the development direction of the city’s sports policies and major pending issues.

The council will serve as the highest consultative body on the city’s overall sports policy, providing advisory opinions and deliberation for the future establishment of the Busan Sports Promotion Plan.

Mayor Park Heong-joon said that the newly appointed council members are top experts who have been actively working in various areas of the sports field, adding that he expects their active engagement in developing sports policies that citizens can easily access and enjoy in their daily lives.
