Busan Metropolitan City Publishes Issue No. 51 of the Registered Academic Journal Hangdo Busan

Busan Metropolitan City, led by Mayor Park Heong-joon, announced that it has published Issue No. 51 of Hangdo Busan, a Korea Research Foundation–registered academic journal that has accumulated research outcomes on Busan’s history since its founding in 1962.

Hangdo Busan was selected as a “Candidate Journal for Registration” in the Korea Research Foundation’s journal evaluation in 2016, establishing itself as a specialized academic journal on Busan history. In the 2018 evaluation, it was upgraded to a “Registered Journal,” and in the 2021 re-certification evaluation it was confirmed as “Registered Journal Maintained,” thereby maintaining its status as a leading academic journal specializing in Busan studies.

To date, Hangdo Busan has published approximately 520 papers, including featured articles addressing diverse topics related to Busan from prehistoric times to the present, research papers examining the historical significance and cultural value of Busan, and materials introducing historical sources such as old documents and historical maps related to Busan’s history.

Issue No. 51 of Hangdo Busan contains a total of 12 papers, including three featured articles on Busan’s art history during the liberation period and nine research articles. The issue presents studies covering a wide range of periods and themes, including history, art history, educational history, and Busan studies.

The featured articles are papers presented at the academic conference “Busan During the Liberation Period as Seen Through Culture and the Arts” held in November 2025. Three papers are included: “Maritime Modernity and Busan’s Culture and Arts: A Perspective” by Professor Gu Mo-ryong of Korea Maritime and Ocean University; “A Cross-Section of the Busan Art Scene During the Liberation Period: Kim Jong-sik and the Record of the Era” by Professor Kim Jeong-seon of Dong-A University; and “A Study on the Construction of the Film Industry and the Activities of Filmmakers in Busan During the Liberation Space” by Lecturer Kim Su-yeon and Professor Moon Gwan-gyu of Pusan National University.

The research articles examine Busan’s history and culture from the modern period to the contemporary era. The nine papers include: “The Printing of the Tripitaka Koreana in 1899 and Beomeosa Temple” by Shin Eun-je, Senior Researcher at the Haeinsa Tripitaka Koreana Research Institute; “The Wartime Relief System Centered on Busan Port in the Early Stages of the Korean War and Its Limitations” by Kim Geon-uk, a graduate of the master’s program at Kyungsung University; “The Nakdong River Estuary Development Project and Environmental Conservation in the 1980s” by Choi Eun-ryeong, Director of the Yeoksa Ttobagideul Social Learning Institute; “A Study on the Murals of the Dokseongjeon Hall at Beomeosa Temple in Busan: Focusing on the Transformation of the Korean-Style Baekjado Iconography” by Kang Young-ju, Cultural Heritage Appraisal Committee Member at the Korea Heritage Service; “A Study on the Dialectical Structure of the Narrative of Suyeong Yaryu: Focusing on the Narratives of Yangban, Malttugi, and Halmi” by Park Mi-hwa, a graduate of the doctoral program at Gyeongsang National University; “A Study on the Place Name Choryang in Busan” by Lee Geun-yeol, Adjunct Professor at Pusan National University; “The North Korean–Bound Poet Kim Gwiryeon of Busan” by Professor Park Tae-il of Kyungnam University; “The 1929 Revision of the Seodang Regulations and the Operation of Seodang: Focusing on the Case of Busan-bu” by Park Su-hwan, a doctoral student at Seoul National University; and “The ‘Guidance for the Treatment of Children with Emotional Disorders’ Project in Busan in the 1970s: From Classification to Care” by Professor Han Hyeon-jeong of Changshin University.

Issue No. 51 of Hangdo Busan can be viewed at municipal public libraries and major national libraries. Cho Yu-jang, Director of the Culture Bureau of Busan Metropolitan City, stated, “Since 1962, our city has been promoting the publication of the specialized academic journal Hangdo Busan to publicize the historical significance and cultural value of Busan. The academic value of the papers published so far has been recognized, leading to its certification as a Korea Research Foundation–registered journal and establishing it as a prominent academic journal in the field of Busan history.” He added, “We will continue to make efforts so that Hangdo Busan contributes to the revitalization of research on Busan’s history and the wider dissemination of research outcomes.”
