Gwangandaegyo Bridge Recognized Worldwide as a Beautiful Bridge of Light: Wins LUCI Cities & Lighting Award

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that the “Gwangandaegyo Bridge Tourism Resource Development Project” won 2nd place in the main awards at the “3rd Cities & Lighting Awards 2026” (LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards), held at 8:00 p.m. on February 26 (local time in Finland).

The ceremony is a global event organized by the Lighting Urban Community International (LUCI) to recognize outstanding projects that effectively utilize lighting for sustainable urban development, and it has been held biennially since 2022.

This award reflects international recognition that the lighting of Gwangandaegyo Bridge goes beyond simple scenic presentation by establishing an intelligent data-driven lighting system and organically integrating the city’s environment and culture.

The city has built a system that expresses natural environmental changes through light by linking real-time data—such as ultrafine dust concentrations and rainfall—from the Korea Meteorological Administration API.

Through customized lighting presentations aligned with the city calendar, including seasonal themes, Christmas, the New Year, and local festivals, Gwangandaegyo Bridge has been expanded into a space for urban communication.

In addition, the city secured both operational stability and high-quality presentation through a centralized management system.

The LUCI judging panel commented, “The project transformed an iconic bridge into a nighttime attraction enjoyed by both citizens and visitors. Through innovative lighting and dynamic presentations, it has enhanced the quality of the city’s nightscape. It represents a remarkable achievement that has reshaped the city’s nighttime scenery and created a special place loved by citizens.”

As a result of data-driven customized lighting presentations and the integration of cultural events, visible effects are also emerging in tourism.

Lighting displays reflecting real-time climate data and special presentations connected with seasonal events and festivals have strengthened the distinctiveness of the city’s nighttime scenery and attracted visitors from both Korea and abroad.

Furthermore, by linking Gwangandaegyo Bridge with drone shows and marine cultural events, the bridge has expanded beyond simple scenic viewing into immersive nighttime content that encourages longer stays.

Mayor Park Heong-joon said, “This international award is a meaningful achievement demonstrating that Busan’s nighttime urban landscape has been recognized globally, and it confirms that Gwangandaegyo Bridge has been acknowledged as a public design example that meets international standards. It is also closely connected with Busan’s World Design Capital (WDC) initiative.”

He added, “Busan Metropolitan City will continue to enhance the quality of the city’s nighttime landscape so that Busan can move forward as a design city that citizens can truly experience.”
