Busan Metropolitan City to Launch Full-Scale Development of the Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center, a Key Hub for the Global Maritime Capital

Busan Metropolitan City announced that it will move forward in earnest with the project to develop the Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center, a key facility that will complete the wide-area transportation network of the global maritime capital.

To accelerate the construction of the Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center, the city proactively secured the relevant budget last year and began the planning service in February. Today, it will hold a kickoff report meeting with related institutions to share the direction of the project.

Through demand forecasting and project benefit analysis, this service will identify the optimal transfer system and layout for transportation facilities. By reviewing advanced domestic and international cases, the plan will comprehensively establish specific development methods and include urban regeneration strategies for surrounding areas, such as improvements to the aging station infrastructure. The service will be completed by February next year, after which the city plans to finalize the selection of a private-sector partner and detailed planning procedures in 2029, with full-scale construction of the complex transfer center scheduled to begin in 2030.

The city also plans to foster Bujeon Station as a comprehensive lifestyle hub that integrates transportation, commercial, cultural, and convention functions rather than serving merely as a transfer facility. Through this effort, the city aims to contribute to balanced national development while strengthening Busan’s competitiveness as a global maritime capital.

Bujeon Station has seen a sharp increase in expected demand following the opening of the Jungang Line and Donghae Line, and further growth is anticipated with the future opening of the Gyeongjeon Line and the introduction of the next-generation Busan-style express railway, BuTX. In particular, with the deployment of the Donghae Line ITX-Eum earlier this year and increased service on the Jungang Line, wide-area transportation accessibility has been dramatically improved, further strengthening the station’s status as a key transportation hub in the southeastern region.

In addition, Bujeon Station is located adjacent to the Seomyeon urban center, Busan Citizens Park, and traditional markets, and it is connected to the urban railway network, giving it optimal locational advantages as a comprehensive lifestyle hub. Through this project, the city plans to create natural pedestrian connections linking Busan Citizens Park and the commercial districts around Seomyeon and Bujeon Station, areas that had previously been divided by railway lines, thereby maximizing synergy for local economic revitalization.

The city is also focusing on securing the justification and momentum for the project by incorporating the complex transfer center plan into national policies such as the Fifth Metropolitan Area Wide Transportation Implementation Plan. Early last year, the city proposed including the Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center development plan in higher-level government strategies such as the Fifth Metropolitan Area Wide Transportation Implementation Plan. Currently, the Metropolitan Transport Commission and the Korea Transport Institute are conducting economic feasibility and validity reviews. In addition, the city is closely cooperating with Busanjin District and local community organizations to ensure that final confirmation and official notification can be achieved within the first half of this year.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “We will develop the Bujeon Station Complex Transfer Center into a vibrant, integrated lifestyle hub where transportation, commerce, and culture come together,” adding, “By reconnecting urban spaces that were previously divided by railway lines, we will bring new vitality to surrounding commercial districts and create a pleasant pedestrian environment linked with Busan Citizens Park, establishing it as a key hub for local economic revitalization that citizens can truly experience.”
