Busan Metropolitan City Opens 7th “Our Neighborhood ESG Center,” Mayor Park Heong-joon Pledges to Foster It as a Key Hub for Carbon Neutrality and Social Value Management

Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the opening ceremony of the “Our Neighborhood Social Value Management (ESG) Center” Busanjin-gu branch today (19th) at 2:00 p.m.

The event will be attended by Mayor Park Heong-joon, Busanjin-gu Mayor Kim Young-wook, National Assembly Member Lee Heon-seung, City Council Member Bae Young-suk, BNK Busan Bank Personal Customer Group Head Jang In-ho, and representatives from Lotte Chemical Co., Ltd. and the Korea Labor Force Development Institute for the Aged.

The seventh branch (Busanjin-gu), opening today, is a case of repurposing the space of the former Bohyeon Daycare Center into the “Our Neighborhood Social Value Management (ESG) Center.”

An idle urban facility resulting from low birth rates and an aging society has been transformed and given a new role as a “sustainable practice hub to protect the environment and the planet.”

Reborn as a central hub for “intergenerational eco-friendly senior jobs,” the Social Value Management (ESG) Center Busanjin-gu branch will promote a variety of eco-friendly experience programs and linked projects for local residents.

The City will operate resource circulation activities involving waste plastics, ice packs, banners, and coffee grounds, along with various resident participation–based eco-friendly experience programs. Through carbon neutrality practice education, hands-on experiences with plastic shredders and power generators powered by bicycles, and mini hydroelectric power plant experiences, the City plans to expand the practice of Social Value Management (ESG) in everyday life.

In addition, citizen-oriented programs will be offered, including free mobile phone charging services using batteries charged by bicycle-powered generators and free coffee provided in connection with the Jeonpo-dong Café Street.

Through these efforts, the City plans not only to raise awareness of Social Value Management (ESG) but also to continue integrated community care projects linked to the identification of at-risk households and the prevention of lonely deaths.

In order to proactively respond to the European Union (EU) Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which will take effect this year, the City plans to collaborate with local public institutions and enterprises, including the Korea Housing Finance Corporation, to expand the “Our Neighborhood Social Value Management (ESG) Center” to a total of 16 branches within this year.

The City will strengthen its cooperative relationship with the Korea Housing Finance Corporation, which has provided a total of KRW 970 million in support since the opening of the first branch in 2022, and further enhance cooperation with local public institutions and enterprises subject to the carbon border tax, thereby advancing Busan as an eco-friendly Social Value Management (ESG) city.

Mayor Park Heong-joon stated, “The ‘Our Neighborhood Social Value Management (ESG) Center’ project is a key component of the 15-Minute City initiative, serving as a community-based hub space where residents can conveniently access facilities in their own neighborhoods and practice carbon neutrality together,” adding, “Social Value Management (ESG) policies represent a new administrative paradigm in which the public sector and businesses create policies together with citizens and share the benefits, and we will continue to expand these efforts in the future.”
