Busan Metropolitan City to Host 2026 Joint Briefing on R&D Programs to Strengthen Science and Industrial Competitiveness

□ Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Heong-joon) announced that it will hold the “2026 Joint Briefing on R&D Programs” at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow (the 10th) in City Hall’s Grand Auditorium to strengthen regional science and technology competitiveness and invigorate efforts to attract research and development (R&D) projects.

○ Hosted by Busan Metropolitan City and organized by the Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP), the briefing will bring together seven major regional R&D support organizations, including Busan Techno Park, the Busan Information Industry Promotion Agency, and the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials, Southeastern Region Machinery Research Center.

□ The briefing was organized to introduce the investment direction of this year’s government R&D budget, finalized at KRW 35.5 trillion, and Busan Metropolitan City’s attraction strategy in response.
○ This year, the government will focus on three key areas: securing new growth engines, establishing science and technology sovereignty, and addressing national missions. In step with this direction, the city and participating organizations plan to concentrate on strengthening mid- to long-term competitiveness, including investment in essential technologies for regional industries and technological innovation in strategic industries.

□ Key agenda items include: (1) investment direction for government and Busan Metropolitan City R&D programs and (2) program briefings by each R&D support organization, followed by Q&A.
○ The Busan Institute of Science and Technology Promotion (BISTEP) will explain the 2026 investment direction for government and Busan Metropolitan City R&D, as well as the city’s system for attracting and supporting national R&D projects and its response strategy.
○ Beginning with the Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials, Southeastern Region Machinery Research Center, participating organizations—such as the Busan Regional Industry Promotion Agency and Busan Techno Park—will introduce major R&D programs they will 추진 this year, followed by organization-specific Q&A sessions to hear feedback and questions from participants.

□ In particular, the event will distribute an on-site booklet summarizing the status of R&D support programs by major government ministries for 2026. □ Kim Dong-hyeon, Director General of the Future Technology Strategy Bureau, said, “At this important time when the national R&D budget is being significantly expanded, the key is to organically link government policy with regional strategy,” adding, “We will actively support this briefing so that it can enhance Busan’s science and technology competitiveness and serve as a catalyst for regional economic growth.”
