Traffic Flow to Gadeokdo New Airport and Busan New Port to Improve: Groundbreaking Held for Elevated Road from Gadeokdaegyo Bridge to Songjeong IC

□ Busan Metropolitan City Mayor Park Heong-joon announced today (February 2) that the City will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the elevated road construction project from Gadeokdaegyo Bridge to Songjeong Interchange (IC) at Huimang Park in Gangseo-gu at 10:00 a.m.

□ The ceremony is expected to be attended by approximately 250 people, including Mayor Park Heong-joon, National Assembly Member Kim Do-eup, Vice Chair Lee Jong-hwan of the Busan Metropolitan Council, the head of the district office, city council members, district council members, and local residents, to celebrate the start of construction.

○ The event will last about 40 minutes in the following order: National Ceremony, introduction of distinguished guests, report on project progress, commemorative address, congratulatory remarks, and a groundbreaking performance.

□ The elevated road construction project from Gadeokdaegyo Bridge to Songjeong IC on National Road Local Route 58, which breaks ground today, involves building an elevated roadway along the section from Gadeokdaegyo Bridge in Songjeong-dong, Gangseo-gu to Songjeong IC.

○ The key objective of the project is to improve traffic flow and enhance driving safety by converting the existing at-grade road into a grade-separated structure. The project will build an elevated road with a total length of 2.72 kilometers, four lanes (two in each direction), and a width of 19.0 meters.

□ To prepare for increased transportation demand following the opening of Gadeokdo New Airport and to resolve chronic traffic congestion in and around the Noksan National Industrial Complex and the western Busan area, the City has pursued this project since 2021.

○ In August 2021, the project secured feasibility by passing the preliminary feasibility study conducted by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and in September of the same year it was included in the 5th National Road and National Road Local Route Construction Plan of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

○ In November 2024, the detailed design was completed. With this groundbreaking ceremony as a turning point, full-scale construction will begin, with completion scheduled for the end of 2030.

□ This project is expected to serve as a core transportation corridor to proactively respond to the sharp rise in transportation demand anticipated from the development of Gadeokdo New Airport and Busan New Port. It will establish major access road networks leading to Gadeokdo New Airport and improve traffic flow more smoothly in the Noksan National Industrial Complex and the Gangseo living area.

○ In particular, by grade-separating the existing at-grade road section where recurring congestion occurred, the project is expected not only to ease traffic congestion during commuting hours but also to significantly enhance the efficiency of logistics and passenger movement between the new airport and the new port.

○ Beginning with this groundbreaking ceremony, the City plans to continue advancing transportation infrastructure that connects all of Busan into a single circular network by systematically linking major bridge and road projects in the western Busan area, including Daejeo Bridge, Eomgung Bridge, and Jangnak Bridge.

□ Mayor Park Heong-joon is expected to state, “The elevated road from Gadeokdaegyo Bridge to Songjeong IC on National Road Local Route 58 is an important transportation corridor linking Gadeokdo New Airport with the western Busan area, and I anticipate that it will bring substantial improvements in traffic conditions that citizens can truly feel,” adding, “We will do our utmost to ensure smooth project implementation so that it can serve as vital infrastructure for accelerating balanced development in Gangseo-gu and western Busan and for realizing ‘Busan, a Global Hub City.’”
